Rebel seat questions

Hello, experienced Rebel builders,

Could I ask several questions about your experience in building up the
seats?

1. The aluminum sheet for the seat pan seems rather flimsy for those
occasional bounced landings and bumps in the sky. I suppose oonce riveted
down it will be sturdy enough, but I was wondering if there were other
thoughts on this matter (e.g., straps).

2. Are most people laying down supplemental channels between the bulkheads
and under the rails to strengthen this area?

3. I have heard that the seat cushion/upolstery kit Murphy sells is a
pretty marginal solution. Are builders mostly doing it themselves? Oregon
Aero offers a custom package for the Rebel seats, but at the price of a nice
leather Lazy-Boy for the shop!

1. Think I increased the seat pan to .020
2. I did. The baggage compartment seems to benefit from a few extra
channels. The newer Rebel plans show two channels under each seat rail.
3. I picked up some Obus Forme back supports for the seat backs. That
was Phil's idea but I use them in my car and think they are great. I
plan to use those and the Sheepskin seat covers from Costco (cdn$60
each). Haven't done it yet though. After trying that heat sensitive foam
padding on a seat, I picked up some of that too. It only seems expensive
until you try it :).

Incidently for anyone using an auto engine in Ontario, BS&B rad in
London Ontario did a nice job on a custom aluminum radiator for me.

Hi Jeff,

I am 80% done with my Rebel 300R (80% to go too).

-My seat pans were .020 and they seem to work fine for my pretend time flying.
-I laid more 2" channel under the floor and added Boeing honey-comb to the
baggage compartment to distribute the load.
-My seats are the Tempur foam but they are darn expensive. I am sewing together
coverings for them as I have my other planes. It (the covering) is not very
spendy.

Hi Jeff
On Rebel 049R I pushed the back out of my seat,the aluminum seat-back pan
tore at the rivets. I seem to recall it was .016.I was taxiing in a very
confined area and had to use the brakes with power on to swing the tail over
obstacles.I have MAM brakes and wheels with 8:50 tires and I don't know if
the required force against the seat back was excessive.To repair I just
remade the back with .020 and to insure against a reoccurrence I looped a 2"
wide strap of .020 near the lumbar,the area of the initial failure.No more
problem.
