The Murphy Builders Site

While I'm at it, I might as well pester the list with a request for
recommendations for a NAV/COM with glideslope to drive my Century HSI. (How
I ended up with this HSI on the shelf is a long and sad story.) And if
anyone knows a good place to buy used or refurbished stuff that would be
great too. I've already checked out the big places like Pacific Coast
Avionics, Chief Aircraft, and the others with the full page advertisements
in Trade-A-Plane, but if anyone has had a real good experience with one I'd
love to hear it.

Just for the record, I'm not interested in fancy color moving map displays,
multi-function displays, IFR GPS, or anything like that. After 23 years of
flying I'm kinda set in my ways and am quite happy with sectionals in my lap
and victor airway routing on the rare occasions that I fly IFR. Same reason
I want engine gauges and CDIs with needles. My 10 year old Garmin 95
handheld with a 10 year old database is also fine with me as an added bonus
navaid.

While we're talking electronics and all that. If memory serves me well you
are putting a V8 in your SR as am I. The V8 I am using is a LS1. It's a
bit more expensive, but it is also a more evolved engine than the old small
block V8. The LS1 uses fuel injection and a coil for each cylinder.
There are hundreds of other changes from the small block V8, but those are
two of the big ones. Subsequently, it requires an electronic module called
the ECU (Engine control Unit). There are two companies that I like at the
moment.

I have looked at several other companies MSD, SDS, Summit, Holley, etc. I
have a friend that races cars and he recommends both of these.
Interesting.... He runs his engine so hard in a road race that his typical
TBO is 20 hours! The Haltech is also the recommendation I got from Johnny
at Northwest Aero. He use to do LS1 conversions

Anyone else know much about these?

I purchased radio, transponder, encoder, intercom from Chief. It was the
best price buy a few bucks. The bonus for me was having them build the wire
harness for $125. I did not want to invest in the crimpers necessary to do
the job.

I guess you've also considered the stock GM ecu for export vehicles with
no O2 sensor. There is a write up in Contact magazine about a SeaBee
with lots of hours on such a setup. He kept his engine pretty much
stock. I can look up his name if you like. That gentleman is also in the
engine conversion business now.

Brian Robinson is currently working on a FWF for (Brent?) Davie's Super
Rebel (over London, Ontario way) using I believe the LS6? Someone correct me
if I am wrong but I believe this is the newer "neater" Vettte engine than
the LS1?!.

I should also add that I can almost sell you TWO freshly overhauled 300HP x
IO-540's for what this auto conversion will cost you from Brian, (or THREE
or maybe even four of George's M14P's)

Ken,

I saw his presentation at Oshkosh and have read the contact article. I
have exchanged some email with him. I did consider the stock GM and it is
not off the list! I forgot to mention it. I didn't know he is in the
conversion business. Do you know anyone who has had him do one?

You are correct. There are many similarities on the surface, but
underneath they are much different. The LS6 is a bigger engine, 405 HP I
think!

I don't believe the LS6 is physically bigger than the LS1. I did a lot of
web surfing when I was initially considering the LS1/LS6 and it appeared
that the extra horsepower was mostly being obtained from improvements in air
induction through the manifold into the cylinders. Here's a quote from
Chevy's website:

" The LS6 is, more than anything, robust. Compared with the LS1, the LS6
aluminum block, cylinder heads, camshaft and induction systems are revised
for better breathing at high rpm. A positive crankcase ventilation system
improves oil control during racetrack and high-lateral-acceleration
maneuvers."

I believe the LS1 has lower bsfc (something like 5 to 10% lower fuel
consumption). Rick - no I don't know anyone else who is using Brian's
services.
