Wheel skis

Posted 6 pics to the archives. 3 in aftermarket and 3 in Rebel -Aircraft of
the wheel skis I built and installed for Ron Hamson. Ron's going to need a
splash of colour on his white Rebel or we are going to lose him in the
snow!!!! :>))

Sorry for the smaller picture size than usual and double my normal
resolution (about 85,000bytes vs about 40,000), but I got a new 17" LCD
monitor and for some reason doing things exactly the same as I did with my
14" monitor produced 125,000byte pics, so I downsized some more to 400 x
300 to at least get them reasonable for the archives.

Will have to get my son to straighten me out, when he is home from
University for Christmas.

Cheers,
Wayne

Hi Wayne,
Thanks for listing the photos of the skis, mine are about a
month away from finish- its such a relief -they look quite a bit like
yours!! ( Mt Cook skiplane pilots are going to give me a rating and a try
out on Tasman Glacier! They like the Rebel.!)

I notice you have no brace between the two beams at the front, you obviously
dont think it is necessary?

Cheers

Wheel skis

Well were have you been hiding??!!

I have a fwd brace on mine (as you know from pics I think I sent you back
when) but I find it really helps to collect snow. I had a full set (3) of
Kehler's here for a C172 and they don't use a forward brace and just let the
0.125 bottom "skin" hold things in place. The Kehler mains are rated at
2675lb so I don't think there is a need for a fwd brace at our weights and I
also downsized the base thickness to 0.090 to cut some weight (beams are
0.063) The rear brace is there to hold the tails apart as on this set I cut
them out clear to the back and used two tail wheels per ski, as I find that
mine collect a huge amount of snow just having a hole cut out for the tire
and also when things are wet on a paved runway they collect ice balls
underneath. You will also find that once you have mounted them to the
gear/axle area that this is also bracing the beams in position and the tail
brace will have to do even less.

I gave Ron a full seasons guarantee on them and hope he gets his tail
section back together and puts numerous hours on them this winter to prove
out my new design.

For those that want to tackle your own, time wise on these I can build an
entire Rebel fuselage (with spring gear option and the legs on) in the time
it takes to build 2 sets of these skis. There is also about $500 to a
machine shop (or the equivalent time if you have the equipment/skill to do
your own) to manufacture the parts to adapt them to the axle and inner axle
block in order to have a pair of pivot points.

Cheers,
Wayne

Wheel skis

Hi Brian & Wayne,
I have been keeping a low profile but still
keeping an eye on you guys!!

Rebels going like a rocket with no more problems with the gear ( built
strong like the old brick s*** house now!!)

I can't wait to try these skis out, it looks pretty scary, especially 6-7000
ft up a glacier.

One question, has anyone tried putting a flight adjustable variable pitch
prop on an 0-320 rebel, I see MT have the MTV-11 composite blade CS prop
that weighs in with governor at under 30lbs which is 6-7lb lighter than the
Sensenich I have on my Rebel. Set at 2800 rpm for take of it would have to
make a rocket ship out of the old girl ( my static rpm is only 2300) the
cruise setting may be useful as well. Any thoughts?

I keep an eye on the cup racing Brian, I see Prada dropped a mast today and
tomorrow is the semi-final, and they say flying is expensive!!

Cheers

Alister

Hi Alister

I have been away for a week & totally out of the news front. Thanks for
the cup update. Glad your Rebel is going so well.

A CS prop would be something on these machines. Has anybody done that yet?

Cheers
