Well we sure got your attention.
This is great! I know we will work something out that will be a benefit
to all. Please keep in mind that the problem as I see it is not what we
on this list want. We are already well taken care of, thanks to Mike.
Back in the dark ages of serial numbers 1-250 all we had was the Rouser
or a long distance call to Canada. The Rouser came out quarterly so you
hoped that you would not make too many mistakes before the next one
arrived. The manual was really bad (my opinion). The problem is what do
the flying Rebels want. How do we keep in touch?
One day you will be there (it will happen) so it is to all of our
benefits to try to solve this problem. I am going to do a mailing to all
of the people who ever subscribed to the Rouser in the hopes that I can
locate more flying Rebels and get their opinion. I am waiting to get an
updated list of owners from Dave Walker.
OK I will start the ball rolling. I am Rich Bartman. I live in the high
desert east of Barstow CA. I own 20 acres and have a 1400ft strip elev
1760 average daily temp. 80F. First flight April 26, 1996, one of the
happiest days of my life. 85 hours total time 10 in tail draggers and
I was at the end of the runway with a plane I had just built. Two
minutes later fear set in. Now I had to land this thing.
The next year was heaven. Flew most days, took a couple of trips and my
wife even started to enjoy flying a little. One day at 5000ft smoke
filled the cockpit. Next the prop stopped. A rebel is REALLY quite
without the engine running. Managed to make Apple Vally airport touched
down hard on the dirt over run and collapsed the bungee gear. Every one
of the bolts tore through the aluminum tubes. Minor damage to the
fuselage. The oil pressure switch for the hobbs meter blew out a
terminal (replace those 20 year old accessories) and dumped all of the
oil. My O-235 was gone. Major damage. No money left to by a new one. A
friend asked me to test the first production run of a Porsche 150 hp
engine and redrive he designed. He had been flying behind one for 430
hrs. so I said why not. After a year of rebuilding the plane (spring
gear), fixing problems with the redrive (that's never happened before) I
was flying again. This time with 150 horses. For the next 25 hour I was
plagued with an oil leak in the redrive. After removing it 6 times and
the problem only got worse I told Ivan enough. The engine now sits
waiting to be picked up. I purchased a O-290 and am now having it
rebuilt.
I am now the publisher of the Rebel Rouser. Support financially and
editorially has fallen off. I was on the edge of killing it but there
are still enough who keep send money to keep it going. Still not much
editorial material. Many wanted the Rouser put on the net. Still others
are email challenged. My idea is to get it on the net and publish a hard
copy for those that want it.
Send me any info or pictures and it will go both ways.

I guess it's been a while since I introduced myself to the list... we're =
up to 118 members now.

My name is Mike Davis, and I host this mailing list, and the associated =
web site. I'm a recent refugee to the civilian job market after 12 =
years in the US Marines... I was an avionics tech on A6-E Intruders, and =
F/A-18 Hornets, now I'm working for a fortune 50 corporation =
administering, and maintaining their network, and other electronic =
equipment. I always wanted to be a professional pilot, but my family =
said that if they were going to pay for college, then I was going to be =
an accountant... so I enlisted to work on airplanes! Hey, if I can't =
fly them, at least I can be around them. I got into computers pretty =
heavily about 13 years ago, and ended up spending my last several years =
in the Marines helping build and administer a nation-wide network. =
About the same time the Internet was taking shape I transformed a hobby =
BBS (bulletin board system) I had run for several years into a small =
Internet Service Provider. It was while I owned and operated this ISP =
that I started providing this mailing list and web site about Murphy =
Rebels (I also do several others, R/C airplane club, Marine =
Reserves...). I sold the ISP last fall after it grew to large for my =
wife and I to handle ourselves, but made a deal with the new owner to =
keep one server on his network so that I could still provide these =
services.

So in answer to your questions...

1. Only one of me... that's why it sometimes takes days, or even a =
week, for me to get things done. I try to stay on top of it though. I =
really am doing this for selfish reasons... I figure when I order my =
rebel (in about 2 1/2 years) I'll have all the gouge!

2. I've tried to get Murphy to post a link on their web page... but =
apparently, since I'm not a builder myself YET, they don't seem to want =
to do it. I'm not sure... I don't get any response to the e-mails when =
I make the request. Philip Craig was the first to place a link on his =
Rebel site (http://www.interlog.com/~airplan/rebel/), and thanks to him =
the list really started taking off. It has pretty much grown word of =
mouth, which is pretty amazing considering the 117 members are =
multi-national. I'm sure Bob has played a major role in the success of =
this list... go to the archives sometime and sort by author, then scroll =
down until you find Bob's posts... it's probably 20% of all posts made! =
The man sure knows, and loves! his Rebels.

I'm glad the list has proved helpful... it has definitely been worth the =
time I've put into it for the information I have gained. I've =
subscribed to Kitplanes for over 10 years now, and I discovered the =
Rebel in 1992 when I spend 2 months in Anchorage Alaska. I don't =
remember his name off the top of my head, but during that time Murphy's =
adds listed a builder's praises for the rebel in the print adds, and =
that builder was in Anchorage. So I contacted him and went over to see =
his rebel. That was it... I was convinced that this was a top notch =
airplane.

Well, I guess I've ramble on enough for now... keep writing all this =
good stuff, I'm taking notes.

Mike

Hi, I forgot to mention this in yesterday's gear and flap message, but =
whoever does this site, many thank you's, the pictures came in loud and =
clear on my computer this time. How many people work this site anyway, =
five of you? Nobody else knows about it? I didn't, until our man bobp =
mentioned the site to me at SNF. Great! Geert.

introduction

Stephen,
Welcome to the group. You will find the list archives a treasure trove so explore it first. Also, get a copy of AC 43-13 1B. That is a USA (FAA) publication that details just about every aspect of build / repair standards you will need. Canada may have something equivalent. There are a number of modifications termed the "Ontario mods" for the Rebel. Search them out and decide which you need. Some of them are practically mandatory. One worthwhile tip is use nutplates inside the wing for the hinges.
Regards,
Ralph Baker
