I managed to get my hands on a really nice freshly
overhauled Sensenich prop for a great price, and am
getting ready to install it. I just finished doing the
spinner and am now on the hunt for some cheap prop
bolts. Does anyone know if there are any good used ones
available? I am trying to avoid the exorbitant price of
a new prop bolt set. I have calculated the exact length
needed and could go AN if they are available in that
size. In AN terms, I would need an AN6H-64A. In prop
bolt terms, it would be a ...6S9.

My Warp Drive still works fine, so this should be an
interesting comparison on performance. The Sensenich is
a 74DM6S8-0-54, so am hoping for good float take-off
and climb performance.

Sorry Walter, no joy here!

I have some AN6-54A's but nothing in the 60 to 64 area. When you get to
these lengths even the certified suppliers take to drilling the heads
themselves to supply what you want, so if you can find some 64A's you could
drill them carefully yourself for the safety wires. Just be VERY careful
that you have the exact right length to engage as much of the thread as you
can without bottoming it out. There is a VERY fine line between this and
bottoming before the propellor is tight. That is why the "prop" bolts that
come with Sensenich kits have the full inch of thread vs the normal AN bolts
1/2" thread length or so. Other than the thread length they are the same
125,000psi Bolts. Just be very careful to get every thread you can engaged,
leaving only about a 1/2 to 3/4 turn before they bottom. The easiest way to
do this is to thread them into the flange bushings by hand until they bottom
out. Then feel the back side of the bushing to see where the bolt ends up.
Make sure you are slightly less engaged when you are done torquing them..

I used the AN bolts with my Warp Drive prop, but they
were a lot shorter, so didn't have too much trouble
finding a set. And yes, you need to have exactly the
right length as there is only 9/16 thread to play with.
To be sure my measurements are correct, I always go out
and buy the regular non-AN bolts in fine thread and
test them in my installation first before ordering the
real thing. I just bought some this past weekend for 96
cents each at Home Depot vs the hundreds of bucks from
the prop manufacturer. Somebody in the supply chain has
got to be making a good buck on these.

I would be happy with regular AN6-64A's, too, if I can
find them and drill out the heads myself.

I suppose it wouldn't be a good idea to try grade
8's...

I know people that use Grade 8 (tractor) bolts (Zenair included apparently)
and my take on this is that they may be stronger, but they might be brittler
as well for shock load though. Grade 5's (basically what an AN is) will
yield/deform before failure where a grade 8 is prone to just snap with no
deformation prior, to warn of impending failure. Might be blowing smoke up
my own @$$, but I don't like playing with the tried, tested and true,
especially when they hold on that important thrust device!!!!

Will have a look in my "special" shop desk drawer in the morning Walter. I
know that I have a set of 7/16 prop bolts hidden in there somewhere, but
don't think I have any 3/8ths. Will verify tomorrow.

I just checked the set of bolts I have from the sensenich prop that came
with my engine and they only measure an6-40. How come yours need to be so
much longer? I'm using an6-xxH bolts with my warp drive because I couldn't
get prop bolts that where short enough. They're working fine so far.

I have the 2 inch spacer, plus the spinner front and
back plates, and the front E26 crush plate with a
washer. Sounds like you don't use the 2 inch spacer on
your installation.

I used regular AN bolts with my Warp Drive too, and
they work fine, but I had a different spacer which
required two sets of shorter bolts, one for the spacer,
and one for the prop.

I just checked the set of bolts I have
from the sensenich prop that came
with my engine and they only measure an6-40.
How come yours need to be so
much longer? I'm using an6-xxH bolts with my
warp drive because I couldn't
get prop bolts that where short enough.
They're working fine so far.

Just curious but is there a very slight taper on the expensive prop
bolts? Someone recently suggested there might be but I had not heard
that before.

Not that I have noticed. Will measure the set I have in my drawer vs a
normal set of AN bolts.

Measaured those $$$ Prop bolts today. Prop bolts are no different than
standard AN bolts. Found them all to be the same diameter top to bottom
(within 5 tenthousanths) and all of them are about 3 to 4 thousandths under
nominal diameter for hole clearance.

A few weeks ago, I was asking the list about where to
get prop bolts. I finally did find a place that
supplied them and other prop related items for a decent
price. They sell a new set of 6 for $48 USD, 6 inches
or less, and $96 for 6 1/2 and 7 inches. In the end, I
didn't buy from them because I located a used set for
even less. However, I thought I would share the
information with the group here in case someone else is

Hello All

Has anyone used grade 8 bolts for prop attachment? An AME said this would be
OK for a homebuilt.Should I report the AME or use these lesser $$$$$$ bolts
being there not aircraft hardware.
