Super rebel prop length

I'm trying to size a three bladed prop for the Super Rebel. Anybody know the distance from the center of the prop to the ground in a level attitude? What's the general rule of thumb for how far the prop tip should be from the ground? No closer than a foot? More? Any flying SRs out there that can tell me what they used? I keep hearing big, slow turning props is the way to go. That true? Use the biggest blade you can? Redline at say 2400 and cruise at maybe 2000-2100? Seems like I remember seeing something like 1800 rpm on the demonstrator when Robin set it up for me to fly around.

We are using a 300 horsepower lycoming (i0540 k1g5d) and purchased a new
McCauley three blade specifically for this model of engine. I think the
diameter is 76 or 78.

Randy and I will be turning a 102" MT three blade on our 400 HP M-14.
We had a choice of 96" or 102".

The consensus of those asked seemed to be ... 102" better off the water and
climb. A bit slower at top end verses the 96". The MT people recommended the
102" indicating that at the speeds we are flying the extra drag of the
longer prop is not really a factor.

Thanks for the reply. I had my eye on MT props but was concerned about
their website indicating a max 350HP for their props. Obviously, their
website is not up to date on all their products or specs. Do you know if
your prop can handle more than 400HP?

Dang - Don't want a hydraulic. Need an electric both to keep weight and
cost down and because of the PSRU choices (again keeping weight and cost
down).

Catching up on old email..... Have you looked into an IVO prop. There much
less expensive. The magnum sells for $2-3,000. They had some issues with
the Magnum 3 years ago, but all recent feedback I have gotten suggests it
is now a solid product. The difference in cost for a 2 vs 3 blade prop is
several hundred dollars. They are very popular with the air boats. They
have a "paddle" version that I think is used often there. I can't imagine
anything harder on a prop (or engine) than going 40 mph and doing a 180 on
an dime. Anyone else have any feedback on IVO?

Super rebel prop length

The only negative thing I've ever heard from the ultralight world is that
their "nickel" leading edge is nothing more than a thin foil tape... helps
with water erosion, but not very effective against rocks. Versus the Warp
Drive which is an actual metal leading edge molded into the blade. This may
not be nearly as important on a Rebel as it is on a pusher ultralight
though... they tend to kick up rocks on landing right into the blades.

Super rebel prop length

Posted: Fri Feb 17, 2012 10:33 pm
by Reed, Britt/FSC Salt Lake
I called and talked to the folks there at IVO about the Magnum (it's max
length is 76" - I was looking for a longer length for the SR3500) and they
suggested the Airboat Magnum - It does not have the tip taper and they make
it 84". They also ponted out that the square tip on the airboat prop allows
them to inlay the stainless steel - unlike the "tape" they use on the other
models (even though the website shows how to change the leading edge tape on
the Magnum Airboat) - He mentioned that the 84" square tip was perfectly
applicable to the aviation applications. He did not have a list of
"satisfied customers" using the higher horsepower stuff.

The consensus of those asked seemed to be ... 102" better off the water
and
climb. A bit slower at top end verses the 96". The MT people recommended
the
102" indicating that at the speeds we are flying the extra drag of the
longer prop is not really a factor.
