NNTP (news) service

Don't know why I didn't play with this before... this works really nice!
One of my main complaints with the existing system is that message threads
aren't displayed properly. Well it displays properly using the NNTP client.
I know Bobp will hate this, but on my Windoze box I use Outlook Express... I
set up a news account to point to "news.dcsol.com", you must check "this
server requires me to log on" and provide a username and password (the
default rebel/builder will work), and subscribed to the groups I wanted. It
downloaded the message headers, organized all the message threads properly,
and promptly told me I had 5207 new messages in the murphy-rebel group! I
am posting this message via the newsgroup instead of the traditional e-mail
method.

If you don't really like getting all those e-mails in your inbox, this might
be a good option to look into. And while the default rebel/builder account
will work to log in, make sure you set your program up to display your name
and return e-mail address so we'll know who the message is from at a glance.

As always, if anyone has any questions, don't hesitate to drop me a note at
mike.davis@dcsol.com

I stated in the last message that you should make sure to use your name and
address when you set up your news reader, but apparently the system will use
the login account when the message is posted via the newsgroup. If you want
to use the newsgroup, it would be a good idea to setup your own account at
Maddog! BBS (if you don't have one already), and log in using that
account... otherwise you wont know who posted the message, they'll all say
"REBEL". It only takes a few minutes to setup your own account, but if you
run into problems, just drop me a note and I'll take care of it.

Hey Mike, I like the way it organizes the thread. However if one doesn't
change the subject line when the subject changes things can get "lost". Of
course that is a common complaint whether using the news or regular email.

I had to use www.dcsol.com not news.dcsol.com to get it to work.

That's why I prefer to just keep getting mail from the list server. I don't
have to remember or take the time to do anything else. Just receive my mail
and decipher!!
Cheers,
Wayne

Hi Scott, the issue of a valid subject line is something that has been
mentioned over and over in the 5 years this list has been running.
Additionally, replying to a message and changing the subject line doesn't
change the thread, it will still show up under the thread for the original
subject. If the subject is going to be changed, then a new message should be
created... copy message content if you want to quote somebody. It all makes
sense to the folks who write the software, sometimes in practice it just
doesn't work perfectly.

I just added the "news" alias to the name server tonight, so it might take a
day or so for this to work for everyone... but yes, www.dcsol.com will still
work even for the news server.

No reason why both can't coexist. I like the threads. Easier than
navigating archive to find and extract usefull tidbits of group wisdom.. I
also like the mail for the reason Wayne mentions.

That's just the way the news reader works... if you did a synchronize manually
right after you sent the message it would be there right away. Most news
readers will sync on the same interval as your mail client checks mail.
Outlook Express has an option to "include while checking for new messages"...
this forces a sync when you click the "check for new mail" button.

My software vendor finally released another upgrade, I installed it tonight
and everything looks good. I wonder if they fixed the Digest mode... anyone
care to try it? ;-) Now that we've got e-mail, telnet, www, and newsgroup
access to the list, all we need is to get the digest working again.

Don't forget that anyone can create their own account on Maddog! BBS and get e-
mail here as well... I mention this because it's always an option to create an
account here, then sign that account up for the list. You can check this
account the same way you check your current accounts, but it would separate
all the list mail out of your other personal mail.
