I got started on my fuselage today. Didn't get real far. The manuel says
mount the elevator pulley brackets on the back of bulkhead "D". Little
birdie whisperin in my ear says they might have ment bulkhead "E". Bulkhead
"E" is at the rear end of the bottom skin fus-23. If I put em behind "D",
they would stick up through the floor. I've been searching the manuel for
more clues but nothing yet.

Hi Joel
I put the elevator pulley on bulkhead "D" as per the manual. The inner floor
(fus-41) stops at bulk head "D". The drawing (fig-1) ,, shows the floor
going
to bulkhead "E" but the floor they sent me only goes to "D".
If your going to put in FUS-41 it helps to leave the lower wraps off until
you
finish the floor.
The only place in the tail cone area the manual is WRONG is at step 87-94.
The top of the one piece bulkhead (fus-36) must not be drilled to fus-29 at
this time.
The top position of fus-36 must be left until step 106 were you fit the fin
in
place.
This is due to the twist in the one piece bulkhead needed for the 3/4 inch
offset of the fin.,, plus you will never get the spacing right without
having the fin in place first.
Also be check to see if your manual has steps 130a-130k for fus-89 tail
stiffener.
Good luck

Hi Joel

I don't remember the bulkhead letters for sure, but if memory serves me
correctly, there are 5 bulkheads that you assemble first A thru E. The
inside
floor spans A thru D and D to E is open. Just behind D you mount the
brackets from the outside floor upwards and then they will clear the inside
floor correctly. It all works out very nicely. Just be careful were you
cut
the holes thru FUS 36 to ensure a straight travel to the elevator horn.

Hi Jim,
Thanks for your input. I checked my fus-41 floor and it only goes to "D"
also. There is a figure 1 in my manuel that shows the floor channels going
all the way to bulkhead "E". I looked over some pictures I took of one of
murphy's factory demonstrators and I can see the pulley brackets on "D" so
that clears that up. Did you install floor channels all the way to "E"?
If your going to put in FUS-41 it helps to leave the lower wraps off until
you
finish the floor.
Goot tip, thanks!
The only place in the tail cone area the manual is WRONG is at step 87-94.
The top of the one piece bulkhead (fus-36) must not be drilled to fus-29 at
this time.

in
place.

offset of the fin.,, plus you will never get the spacing right without
having the fin in place first.
Duely noted. does the twist affect the stab attatch brackets too?
Also be check to see if your manual has steps 130a-130k for fus-89 tail
stiffener.
No I don't have that. My ser# is 416 so my manuel may be newer than yours.
I did get a construction bulletin that covers a triangular extention at the
back of the side skins. From the bulletin - "The reinforcement consists of
a triangular flanged piece which is nested inside of the fuselage side skin
(fus-23-2) therby extending it into the tail section"

Now I have to figure out if they mean the side skins, or fus-23 which is a
BOTTOM skin. I think it's the sides. Can anyone tell me how far back this
extention goes and what guage sheet metal to make it from?
Good luck
Jim R254
Thanks!

Hi joel
I stoped the floor at "D" ,, some people install extra channels between "D"
and "E" and cut out a piece of sheet metal to fill in the area . I am
waiting till I see where the battery needs to go.

The twist in the one piece bulkhead will match up to the stab bracket. If
you
dont wait to do this step you will have to make a shim to go between the two
parts.

My manual is dated 07/27/94 ,,, I got a newer one at a later date ...
Dont try to make FUS-89 get the factory part or it won't fit the inside
bends
of the side skins.. Dont try to install the factory part (fus-89) with out
the 4 pages and 6 figures in the newer manual
My last two kits were shipped on 3/27/95 and they did have fus-89 in the box
but not on any parts list so I order these parts again in 1995 ,,, anyway
I
have an extra set of fus-89 now.

Ok, I think I understand this. The stab brackets I was wondering about were
the horizontal stab brackets. Don't they mount to this as well?

Want to sell them? I gotta buy a set somewhere. Let me know.

Hi Joel
The twist in the top of the one piece bulkhead doesnt change anything in the
area where the Horizontal bolts on.
The Horizontal has one AN4 bolt with a nut plate on each side as It was made
to hinge for towing down the road.
I am planning on using two bolt on each side and maybe even a piece of angle
to tie all four bolts together ,,,, so it cant hinge IN FLIGHT ....but
this
is just my opinion not MAM.

Yes I will sell the extra two FUS-89 .... make me an offer????
I will include all needed photo copy of the manual also.

Jim,
While there's probably no harm in using 2 bolts instead of one,
provided there's proper edge distance, etc., I can virtually promise
you that, WITHOUT the STRUT, the stabilizer WILL fold in flight !!

Of course, I'm sure you WILL still have a strut ...
