Non-TSO'd, Non-PMA'd

Hi all,

I was pricing an airspeed indicator online for my
Super Rebel and noticed a huge price difference
between the TSO'd/PMA'd and Non-TSO'd, Non-PMA'd
instrument. I know what TSO and PMA means. But, what
does it mean as far as build quality, durability, etc?
I once bought a cheaper VSI for my Cessna years back
that was listed as an 'import' and it quit working
after 9 months!

Thanks,

-Jason

I suspect the only difference is a piece of paper to keep the FAA happy
for certified aircraft. If it's from a company that doesn't make certified
parts, then all bets are off, though most are probably just as good or
better than those with the piece of paper.

There are some few items that have to be certified, like ELT's and IFR
GPS's.

Non-TSO'd, Non-PMA'd

Howdy Jason.

Please be aware that non-TSO'd instrumentation is
usually not repairable by instrument shops. They
consider them as 'disposable'.

As well, any Canadian registered aircraft that have a
transponder installed require 2 year recertification
(see CAR 625 appendix C item 13) 'including any
altitude sensing reporting mechanisms' (this will
include an altitude encoder if your transponder is
mode 'c' capable, as well as your altimeter).
Non-TSO'd altimeters are usually considered
uncertifiable by instrument shops.

Before purchasing you non-TSO'd equipment, you should
consider all this.

James
