120 degree versus 100 degree

Hi everyone!

Searched the archives, but couldn't find the answer. I've got 100 degree
countersinks and dimple tools. I've been told the Avex CS rivets are 120
degree. Can I use the tools I've got, or do I need new stuff? If I need 120
stuff, where can I buy it?

Yes the Avex are 120*. Spruce and others offer 120* dimpling sets
including the type for use with a pop rivet puller. I like to drill a
bit smaller than #30 and redrill after dimpling to get an exact hole
with parallel edges. For an occasional countersink, a 118* drill bit
seems to work although I ground one to 120*.

I just used the 100 degree, they seemed to pull in just fine. I thought this
had been discussed before but couldn't find anything either. Anybody else
just use the 100?

100 degree worked fine for me as well. However, I flush riveted the entire
aircraft so I likely used my tool more frequently than most. However, the
wing stringers I bucked with AN rivets and wherever it was easy access I put
in AN rivets with a squeezer. I also did some testing of pull away strength.
This is the force required to lift the skin off a surface along the axis of
the rivet shaft. The AN rivets were slightly stronger and the failure mode
was the skin would rip before the rivet failed. I was not able to test them
in a shear mode (90 degrees to the axis of the rivet), my scale wouldn't go
high enough for such testing.
