Thunderstorms

I learned a lesson about thunderstorms yestarday. After getting a weather
breifing for a flight from muskoka to centralia that just called for haze
and reduced visibility in mist We took off for home. The haze was worse
than pedicted and we ended up just following the roads instead of going
direct. When I saw lighening in front of me I headed south. When I saw
lightening to the south I landed The first grass strip I saw. I was still
sitting in the plane with my wife in the light rain congradulating myself
for being so smart and landing when the storm hit us. We jumped out and
started to put the gust locks on then the plane weathercocked into the wind
and started blowing away backwards. Jan held onto a strut and I held onto
the prop and we were lucky to guide it in beside a hangar and out of the
direct wind without breaking anything. If I ever get caught by a
thunderstorm again I'm going to make sure the plane is tied down facing
into the wind with all the gust locks installed before the storm hits.
