Rudder cable routing

I'm installing fairleads and generally trying to work out the cable routing through the tailcone. I'm assuming it is a bad idea to have the rudder cables approach the attach point on the rudder at an angle, unless it is very slight since if approaching from slightly below the cables would pull downward on the rudder horns as well as forward and might cause them to bend. Anybody have any opinions on how much of an angle is too much? None at all? If you shouldn't have any angle it appears as if you must drill holes through the forward tailwheel attach bracket plate that goes from one side of the rearmost tailcone area to the other. &%$#! I sure wish the manual would have told me that before I installed it! Gonna be very difficult to drill now.
On a previous subject, I tried drilling out the cable bushings from 3/16 to a 1/4. Worked, but marred the outer part of the bushing from being clamped in a vise to drill. Not sure if that might be bad for the cable. Also concerned with the extremely tight angle the cable has to be bent to go around the small bushing. You can see the cable strands separating as you bend it around. Must be OK since this is the correct bushing for 1/8 cable. I guess you just slide the ferrel up as close as you can get it and swage in place. Gonna take two people to do this properly. I'm still thinking about just using thimbles instead. I wonder if the attach points on the rudder and the elevator were supposed to be 3/16 despite the manual telling me to drill out to 1/4? 3/16 bolt would probably be plenty strong enough for that purpose.
