Arlington, Border Crossing, etc.

Just got back from Arlington, and it was great to finally meet and talk to
some of the people from this list, Steve S, Chuck B, Bruce G, and others, as
well as many Rebel wannabes. Saw Steve's plane, and wow, talk about
attention to detail, and I can see now why it is such a cruise performer. I
am glad I didn't have mine parked next to his.

A while back on this list, I saw some discussion on transponder requirements
for crossing the border or over flying the US. Since I just went through
this, I thought I would share my experience and what I learned. My apologies
if this was already answered as I have not been able to keep up with all the
list messages over the last few weeks.

First, you don't need a transponder, unless you need to go into an airport
or zone that requires one. Apparently, that discrete transponder code was
only a temporary requirement after 9/11. You do, however, need to file a
flight plan and notify customs in advance to land in a destination across
the border. For over flying the US, but not landing, you should also file a
flight plan with the normal route points indicated, but that is it. On the
latter, I say should, as this is what the FSS told me, but then I also spoke
to pilots who regularly fly across a piece of US territory from the Lower
Mainland here in Vancouver to get to southern Vancouver Island and don't
file flight plans.

All in all, a relatively painless experience, though. The customs people on
both sides of the border were a lot nicer, helpful, quicker, than the normal
ones you run into at large commercial airports or when driving across, and
that includes phoning for advance notification. So, now that I've got my $25
US annual decal, I may have to go back a few more times this year.

Walter

Dave, I will come back either Friday evening or Sat morning. I will bring a
tent, so could camp overnight by the airplane.

Hi Walter..

Are you just going down for the day, or for the weekend? We'll be
driving down on Friday after work and camping on the field until Sunday.

Look forward to finally seeing your plane..

I just got back in town today, and still planning to go to Arlington
tomorrow, Friday, probably be there around 9 AM or so. Still have to
figure out the border crossing and customs procedures, and do the
flight planning tonight, so as long as I don't run into anything
unexpected, hope to see some of you there then. My plane should be
easy to spot, C-GBEE.Walter

Walter, Steve,

Great to here you guys plan on being in Arlington. I would
very much like to see your planes. I sure missed you all
last year while I was still building but it's never to late.
Maybe you can park your planes together. I plane on being at
Arlington Friday about 1:00 and all day Saturday. I'll
introduce myself.

I have first flight scheduled for the 23 of July.

It doesn't look like I'm going to be ready for Osh anyway but maybe I'll

Hey Drew,

If you're serious about a trip to Michigan and Ohio, you'll be going
right by, so why not stop in to Windsor, Ontario.

We'd love to have a look at your plane. and you can see ours. It's
right on the Windsor Airport property, in the "401 hangar". Let me
know if you might consider this.

Take care.
