Hey everyone,

Our 0-320-D2A engine finally arrived and we are
excited. We had to order a oil filter relocation kit
because their was not enough room to mount the engine--
because the oil filter needed another inch to fit in there--
why didn't murphy correct this with Lycoming?

Anyway, what I really wanted to find out is about
a different exhaust system. We were sent the Forsling
exhaust through Murphy and we don't like it because
it doesn't come with the option of a good muffler. Forsling
only has these little noise cancelers that only reduce the noise a
couple of decibels. Could you guys please tell me where
I can find some options?
Thanks,
Shira Ellsworth

Shira,

There is a company (BNC...?) that makes an oil filter that turns the filter 90 deg. to the engine case so you don't have to use a remote location and hoses on an already crowded firewall. I posted a picture of it to the list last year.

Someone was looking for exhaust system sources
recently. An A&P friend building an Accrosport biplane just fitted a
custom exhaust from Custom Aircraft Parts in El Cahon, California. Phone
1-800-561-1901. It was made to measure as a basic crossover
system for an O-320 with a carb heat muff on one side.
The welds and workmanship are excellent. The cost was $750 plus $25
shipping.

The Forsling system I got several years ago was a very nice piece of work with our O-360. It had to do with fire all interference and was promptly corrected by Forsling. They were going to modify their dimensions. I give them high marks.

There are a couple of comments. John Forsling suggested a "restrictor plate" to slow th air flow into the heat muff to allow it time to heat around the exhaust. Final size depends on installation but 1 1/4 inch hole to start if I remember. Also, it is easy to put the cabin heat muff around the crossover slip joint. Don't do it! CO may be interoduced into the cabin. Fine to put the carb heat muff around the slip joint however. Note the Forsling carb heat muff is open sided and does not need a "heat dump" like the cabin heat muff. Look at the inlet / outlet locations on the cabin heat muff and be sure it will work for your installation

Enough heated comments.

Thanks to all that replied to my questions. Waiting for Nancy's reply on a
price for their system. If its around 1000 cdn, with the dollar the way it
is, I'd be inclined to go with the Aircraft Exhaust Tech. system with
mufflers and double cabin heat muffs for 1149 us. Thanks again,
