Just a note to update the status of the repairs to my spring gear mounts,
Grant from Murphy says Darryl, Kerry and him are spending time on this at
the moment, and are treating it as a priority as I am not the only person
with this problem!!

Yahoo!

Will post info as it arrives.

Hi Alister,
I saw your 'bridge truss' landing gear mod pictures. Sure is awesome
looking and no doubt you have eliminated all flex from the system. I'll be
moving forward of the tailcone soon and have been trying to figure out what
I'll need to do in that area. I won't be using it on very rough strips but
I do use grass strips a lot. Were the aluminum plugs in the carry throughs
not sufficient? I've been thinking I'll put in the solid plugs - but also
maybe a .125 X 1" 4130 strap on each side from the front of the front carry
through to about half way up on the front of the cage right about in front
of the instrument panel. I'm thinking that may triangulate the area
sufficiently. What do you think?

I see what you are trying to do with your strap, it may work, but it may
struggle to have enough leverage to do the job completely, I couldn't say.
You would have to be careful with the holes you would need to drill to
mount
this strap, you may risk weakening the door post, also the heads of the
bolts could get in the way of the door.
Hi Alister,

IT was just a thought. I have a while before I have to make any decision.
I'm more concerned how to mount the strap at the carrythrough than the door
post. I could make a threaded insert in the door post to bolt the strap and
not have any bolt heads showing in the door opening. I'm just trying to
figure out a way to get _some_ triangulation in the area to help stiffen it
up a bit. I don't use brakes much except for run up really but even that
would put quite a bending load on the gear I would think.
I am planning on putting in the plugs in the carry throughs too. Maybe I
could drill and tap into the plugs in the front carry through to mount the
straps.

Joel

Rebel spring gear

Hi Joel,
The inserts in the ends of the carrythrough are a different
issue to the braking loads, I do believe that the spacer system as per the
manual does need improving.

I also think that if I had done the 'bridge truss' (as you call it ) mod
earlier it would have saved a lot of heartache along the way. There is an
awesome amount of leverage coming from those braking loads and I feel they
should be isolated before they enter the fuse with the design of the system
that is in place at present, Murphy however seem to disagree and feel that
it all should be all right as it is. My experience tells me otherwise.

I see what you are trying to do with your strap, it may work, but it may
struggle to have enough leverage to do the job completely, I couldn't say.
You would have to be careful with the holes you would need to drill to mount
this strap, you may risk weakening the door post, also the heads of the
bolts could get in the way of the door.

Hope this is of some help.

Cheers

Alister

Joel,
Mounting to the carrythrough would be easy, I have run 1/4 bolt
right through the whole setup fore and aft direction, you could just latch
on to those.
I did look at something like you describe but opted for the external method
mainly because I thought it would be bullet proof. I was not too concerned
about what it looked like. ( it does look very functional!)

When I say braking loads I guess I am just using that term to describe the
direction of the loads, even on a relatively even grass field there is
considerable forward and back movement of the leg as it runs over the small
dips and hollows, the leg really does work all the time.

Cheers

Rebel spring gear

Does anyone know the size of the bar stock used to make up the blocks to replace the crush tubes on the Rebel spring gear? My gear is already attached and before I start peeling back skin I'd like to have the material on hand.
