transfer plastic?

O.K., guys. I've just begun work on my SR3500 fast build. While reading ahead, in a few areas, I notice that MAM refers to the use of 'transfer plastic' to replicate rivet holes. I haven't been able to locate a description of such a process, in the techniques section of the book. I think I can imagine what they're trying to say, but how about a clear explanation of materials/techniques? My experience is in composites and fabric. This whole concept of making an airplane out of aluminum seems a bit new-age to me....

Hi Bill,
I believe they are referring to using a piece of clear lexan, or similar plastic you can see thru, to drill duplicate rivet holes in overlapping materials. Then use the plastic to lay out the pattern on the aluminum piece you want to permanently install. Hope that helps

And in my "upgrade" kit the sheet of transfer "plastic" was packaged in between the left and right leading edge skin doublers. I have been doing similar for years when rebuilding wrecks. Before you take the item apart you get the rivet hole locations for the patch panel. I have been using poster board and taping in place. Then you poke a hole, with a steel point, into each rivet mandrel hole. Makes a perfect pattern to drill your new piece 3/32 and then back drill/open up to #30 (or to suit as required).

Hi Bill
I'm building a Rebel but I'll give you the idea.
When there are already holes in a piece That you have to Add another piece and you can't get the other piece behind the first piece to drill the holes in the same place, What you do is get a piece of plexi glass 1/16 - 1/8" put it over the piece with the holes in it. You can now see where the holes are. Drill the plexi glass so that you have a pattern of the holes, now lay it over the new piece and "volla" drill the holes in the same place. If your drilling a piece that is curved, be sure to drill to 3/32" first, then cleco the pieces together and final drill to 1/8". Ther is some distortion when going around corners.
