Rebel firewall reinforcement

Hey Rebel rousers,

This question is probably for Wayne, seeings how it is his "fix" we're
copying here. We finally actually did something last night. We cut a
piece of 1/16" 6061aluminum to make the bottom reinforcement plate to
place across the lower mounts are on the firewall, as per Waynes
"fix". The point came up that if we are trying to stiffen the
firewall, then a 1/2" break on/along the straight part of the upper
edge of the piece would certainly make this piece "stiffer", and
would increase the support to the firewall, as is done on the two
upper firewall pieces. Is this a good idea?

Also, why does the upper edge of this piece "dip" to make a sort of
half dog-bone shape? Is this necessary? If the break I'm asking
about is a good thing to do, then would it be OK to leave the upper
edge straight across from witches hat to witches hat, and put a 1/2"
break on/along it for maximum length?

By the way, my new little air powered nibbler is a really neat tool!
Cuts curves and straights as well as anything else have or that I can
think of.

TIA.

Have fun.

Rebel firewall reinforcement

Hey Bob,

Yep. We did the "eyebrows" with it. We're still "discussing" how
many more lites to put in. (argcussing...wouldn't that be a neat
word!!) And I've just done the 1/16th firewall bits too. Neat-o
device.

Take care.

ps...I just got in from the shop. I was finishing up the aluminum
sumps to weld on the fuel tanks, and had drilled for the 1/8NPT sump
drain. When I was ready to tap it, I noticed that the special
tapping fluid for aluminum was over the other side of the shop. So I
grabbed an old squirt tin of EZ-Tap off the
"back row" of the shelf instead. It didn't squirt out at first, so I
squeezed harder on the tin and the tin broke open and spilled this
stuff all over my hand. It was rusted almost through I guess. Boy,
the fumes have given me a real bad headache, and I can stilll smell
it. Nasty stuff.
