SR wing weighs a ton!

Hi all,

I know we all usually post messages asking for help.
Not this time.

I clecoed all the skins onto my SR wing last night for
the first time. I am simply amazed and surprised at
how much the wing weighs (discounting weight of clecos
too!).

I thought I would be able to turn it over easily...but
not so.

Happy building!

-Jason

SR wing weighs a ton!

I have finished my wings and yes they are heavy. I am the only one working on this at my house so I had a problem flipping them as well. As you know you don't want to damage them when doing this. I built wooden jigs/brackets for each end of the wing. I th
en built supports that were detachable from the bench with little effort. When the time came, I would lift one wing and connect it to the support... lift the other end and attach to the other support. The wing was then like a pig on a spit. Flipping was ea
sy and this did help me along the way. I plan on using them when I paint the wings. It makes it very easy.. you paint one side, then the other and keep the larger surfaces flat minimizing runs! Hope this helps!

SR wing weighs a ton!

Hello Jason:

I wrote about this along time ago.

I'm building just a rebel so bear that in mind.
Of course your wing is on the table and you have attached your flap attach
brackets. Bolt two hook-eyes in the ceiling above each end of the wing in
the middle for & aft. Buy a couple of pulleys(make sure your bolts are well
anchored and the pulleys are certified for the weight with some to
spare)attach to the eye bolts.I used 3/8 rope. Get a fairly long piece, put
each end through a pulley. Attach the end of the rope to the aileron bracket
at each end. Now take 2 2x6 a foot longer than the span of the wing and put
a piece of carpet on them. Place them about a quarter way in from the end of
the wings, carpet side up, block them up to support the wing. Pull the rope
in the middle and the wing starts to lift, as the wing becomes vertical,
push the leading edge over and let it down. The weight of the wing is on the
2x6. If you want more support you could use a wider piece of plywood or more
2x6. I rolled the wing over several times like this with and without the
skins on. Without the skins the spares will bend. Be gentle. Make sure the
2x6's are high enough so that the cleco's don't hit the table. Also make
sure when you turn the wing over the cleco's on the other side don't hit the
2x6's.

Worked for me.
Good luck
