I changed the SUBJECT line above to make this easier to follow ...

Just a thought for those working on Subaru conversions -
the Murphy factory cowling for the Rotax 912 would likely fit nicely,
as it has LOTS of room, AND a position already molded in for a VW
radiator, horizontally at the bottom. Might be worth a look ....

Rick Abbott, in Newfoundland, had a custom production mold
made for his Subaru conversion. I understand that cowlings pulled
from that mold are available from Crossflow Engineering. They also
make a BEAUTIFUL formed metal cowling (but it is VERY pricey !!!)

Joel some questions re your engine. I believe it's an EJ-22? Are you using
EFI
or have you installed carbs? ...The box on top?
Yup, it's an EJ-22. I've installed two Weber 44mm two barrel carbs in
place
of the EFI. I just feel more comfortable with gravity fed carbs than the
complexity of EFI with the high pressure fuel pump and the need to plumb a
return line to the tanks and all. Not to mention the dragons that live in
the ECU that knowone even knows about. Iv'e heard that in some ECU's
(maybe
not soob's - I dunno), if the alternator fails, it assumes the engine isn't
running and shuts off the fuel pump! Now I know that would be easy enough
to work around with a manual switch to the pump, but what other suprises
might be lurking in there?
Who's redrive are you using?
I built the redrive myself. I got plans from RFI for it so I know the
design is proven. I did make a few mods though. The front bearing support
is much more ridgid than the plans call for. I also used plenty of dowel
pins to hold everything in alignment when it is assembled.
what size rad is that and what is it out of etc etc.
It's a Harrison heat exchanger (GM A/C evaporator core). I have one on
each
side. I was planning to have the air inlets on each side of the prop as
normal and have some reverse scoops on the sides of the cowl to suck the
air
through the exchangers. Dave Bangle's setup has a radiator across the
bottom and a duct so the hot air is dumped out the normal bottom cowl
opening. That setup seems to work well for Dave and I might do something
similar. Not sure I'll like the looks of the scoops on the side of the
cowl.

Bob, do you know if the Murphy cowls have any extra length to them? My
Subaru bolts right up to Murphy's dynafocal mount. My prop flange is
centered perfectly with the mount, but is about 2" further forward than the
flange would be on a Lycoming engine.

I believe the Rotax 912 cowl IS oversize, to allow trimming to fit
- don't think there is much (any?) on the Lycoming cowl, though. I am
NOT a big fan of the so-called "speed cowl" anyway, partly because of the
extra cost of all the bits to make it work, partly because it can make
it much more awkward to work on the engine, and partly because you
need to enlarge openings for proper cooling .... but that's just me !

Not sure where the opening would come in the Rotax 912 cowl
relative to your crank - probably OK, but the factory should have all
measurements for that cowling. Maybe we could get Dave Walker to take
a few photos of it from different angles and put them up on the Murphy
site ???!!!

ps
It's easier to follow the 'thread' if you add your reply to the TOP
of the previous message - I've moved yours up for this one ....
Thanks !

Hi Bob

My cowling is complete and I did not have to get any 'extra bits' to
complete
it. Simply the piano hinge that came with it. Am I missing something? It
looks fine to me.

Wes,

I have a damaged Rebel with a subaru conversion in it
that I will sell if you are interested. The plane was
build and flown for 300 hours and sold to a flight
instructor that wrecked it the day he purchased it.
The plane could be rebuilt. I had intentions of
rebuilding it myself but with already building another
Rebel and trying to get a house built before my wife
retires from the Army next year, I have WAY to many
projects and not enough time.

The plane is in MN and I will be back there on the 9th
of June if you are interested.

Keith,
How bad was the damage? I'm close to buying a kit, but repairing one might
get me flying sooner. Do you have a sale price in mind?
