SR wingtips (Rebel builders might be able to add too!)

Hi folks,

I have a few questions regarding installation of the
wingtips on the SR.

I am just about finished with the right wing. I am
then going to build the flaps and ailerons. I noticed
the manual advises installation late in the build
process...after the fuselage is built and the wings
mounted. Does anyone see why I could temporarily mount
the aileron and then install the wingtip? I am
assuming as long as I can mount the aileron and hold
in in position so that the bottom surface of the spade
is flush with the bottom wing skin I could go ahead
and mount the tip. Am I missing something?

Second question: I noticed Murphy says to rivet the
wingtip to the wing? I would rather use screws as I
would like access to the strobe wiring and for
inspection purposes. Anyone done this and have and
advice? Any pics? Was thinking of using nutplates but
they are expensive and hard to get here in the UK.

Thanks for everyones help with my other questions!

Jason,

Greetings from Colorado. I use to travel lots to Europe, but never made it
to Aberdeen. Maybe someday! I have finished my wings and did everything
you have suggested. I installed the wing tips with countersunk screws into
nut plates. (doesn't Aircraft Spruce ship to the UK?) I also mounted the
aileron to the wing and did exactly what you described. I found there were
some minor adjustments that were necessary to the aileron mounts. It is a
little bit of a challenge to get the tips on square! So double check
things along the way. To get a good seal between tip and wing, I covered
the wing with tape and Vaseline (release compound). I then covered the
inside of the tip with an epoxy-micro-balloon mixture and put the tip on...
screws and all. After the glass was hard I removed and sanded. This gave
me a perfect fit between wing and tip, no air-gaps.

While we're on the subject of wing tips, has anyone considered mounting
antenna's IN the tips? I think the RV people do this. Yes I am a bit of a
fanatic when it comes to drag. I have flush riveted the entire aircraft.

SR wingtips (Rebel builders might be able to add too!)

The right wing tip did not fit well on my SR. We had to cut the side of the
tip and reform the trailing edge.
The alignment of the wing tips matches the ailerons, flaps and the roof of
the fuselage.
It was tricky for us to get everything to match.
If you do the tips now your stuck with the results, or may have rework
later. We painted the tips early on and did the fitting a month before first
flight.

SR wingtips (Rebel builders might be able to add too!)

I considered mounting Bob Archer's antennas (available from Aircraft Spruce)
in the wingtips. I spoke to him on the phone and he said the RVers are
reporting good results. He also said that the close proximity of the
strobes shouldn't be a problem. However, I'm ashamed to say, I chickened
out and pulled the coax out of my wings. I'm such a stickler about good
comm and nav signals that I decided not to experiment with that part of the
project. My biggest worry was not that the antennas wouldn't work there.
I'm mostly concerned about having strobes and power supplies there too.
What a wimp, eh? Wait a minute. I'm still planning on using a Chevy. That
should cancel out my nav-comm wimpiness.

Dear Jason,

You might want to contact Grant McDaniel in Technical Support. I had the same
problem on my right wingtip. They had the same problem on a factory-built
Super Rebel. Their fix was to cut the top of the wingtip at the spade hinge
line; flex it down the required amount to line up with the ailerons; and re-
glass over the cut. It looks simple enough, but Grant advised me to wait
until fitting both wings to the fuselage to insure that everything lines up.
