Ok I'll be first to confirm the photo's are Hoerner tips. They are
standard issue on most Zenair 601's.

These are photos of Neil Mont's homemade Hoerner tips - they are
very crude, although they have more of a curve than the flat cutoffs
that come on the Zenairs.

The real Hoerner tips are beautifully carved to have a curved
scoop-out under the overhang - Dave's will be like this, with the only
bump being a mounting area for combo nav/strobe lights. Can't wait
'til the January meeting, when we'll get to see the prototypes !

Hi Bob,
I was wondering if the nav/strobe combo lights could would work, I already
bought them. Please try to get some pictures! Sure would be great to take
pictures at the builders meetings and send them out to this list - kinda
like a "virtual builders meeting". I will probly have a scanner soon and
would be happy to help if you think it's do-able.

Joel,

Will try to get some photos at next meeting - 'virtual meeting' sounds
GREAT - I like it !!!

Of course, if you talk to Dave Walker, he'll tell you that I am
THE WORLD'S <WORST> PHOTOGRAPHER !! Telephone poles sticking out of
people's heads, feet cut off ... all the bad stuff !!

I'm getting better, thanks to Dave's many suggestions - but I'll
never be a 'natural' like he is !! Most of the photos in Murphy's ads
are Dave's, and he shot almost all of the first Rebel video himself,
with an 8mm camcorder !!!

I have a couple of scanners here (one B/W, and one colour) - my
problem is converting the scanned formats to something everybody can
view .... What format do folks prefer ???

I would think .jpg (jpeg) image files would be the most universal. You can
get pretty nice colour pictures at about 20-30k in size. I think they are a
bit smaller than the equivilent .gif files. Here's a sample .jpg file of my
engine that I'll be putting in my Rebel. This image was scanned by Kodak
BTW. I dropped off the film and requested digital processing and picked up
the images on the internet. Pretty slick!

Joel some questions re your engine. I believe it's an EJ-22? Are you using
EFI
or have you installed carbs? ...The box on top? Who's redrive are you
using?
what size rad is that and what is it out of etc etc. I would appreciate
anything
you can tell me about your setup as I have an EJ22 sitting in my shop as my
potential power source and of course I'm mulling over all the concerns re
dual
ign or not, stock efi or not, what redrive to use etc.
Many thanks ...Wray R306
PS I'll put your engine on my more picture page

Joel some questions re your engine. I believe it's an EJ-22? Are you using
EFI
or have you installed carbs? ...The box on top?
Yup, it's an EJ-22. I've installed two Weber 44mm two barrel carbs in place
of the EFI. I just feel more comfortable with gravity fed carbs than the
complexity of EFI with the high pressure fuel pump and the need to plumb a
return line to the tanks and all. Not to mention the dragons that live in
the ECU that knowone even knows about. Iv'e heard that in some ECU's (maybe
not soob's - I dunno), if the alternator fails, it assumes the engine isn't
running and shuts off the fuel pump! Now I know that would be easy enough
to work around with a manual switch to the pump, but what other suprises
might be lurking in there?
Who's redrive are you using?
I built the redrive myself. I got plans from RFI for it so I know the
design is proven. I did make a few mods though. The front bearing support
is much more ridgid than the plans call for. I also used plenty of dowel
pins to hold everything in alignment when it is assembled.
what size rad is that and what is it out of etc etc.
It's a Harrison heat exchanger (GM A/C evaporator core). I have one on each
side. I was planning to have the air inlets on each side of the prop as
normal and have some reverse scoops on the sides of the cowl to suck the air
through the exchangers. Dave Bangle's setup has a radiator across the
bottom and a duct so the hot air is dumped out the normal bottom cowl
opening. That setup seems to work well for Dave and I might do something
similar. Not sure I'll like the looks of the scoops on the side of the
cowl.

Thanks Joel, but all i got was a HUGE bunch of garbage !!!

ALWAYS send picture files as ATTACHMENTS - then anyone can view them,
not just those stuck with MicroShaft products ....

Will check Wray's site to see what it looks like.

For what it's worth, I'm sure most people would be MUCH happier if
EVERYBODY sent photos to ONE place - either DCSOL.COM, hosts for this
list, or Murphy themselves, or perhaps to Wray, if he's willing. Then
you could just post a notice that the picture was there to view IF DESIRED.

I get over 100 emails every day, and I sometimes get peeved when
someone sends me 2 meg. of UNSOLICITED photos !!! (not from THIS group,
but there are several OTHERS !! )

Hoerner tips

Post by Bob Patterson » Fri Feb 17, 2012 5:56 pm

OOOOooooppps !!! Sorry - forgot you had an Elite !

You can't put landing lights in the wing tips - don't think there's
enough room. And you can't use Dave's Hoerner tips - they won't fit ...

So it looks like the leading edge light is THE choice !!
Makes it easy, anyway ! ;-)
