G'day


I have just finished assembling the landing gear using the 9044 rings and Geert Frank's patented bungee stretcher.

How easy is that after trying to do it the factory way! Thanks to Geert for sharing the details of his invention.

I have not put the safety cables down the centre of the landing gear tube as per the factory, but I will use the "alaskan"
style safety cables on the outside of the tubes.

I have some questions regarding the safety cable.
The manual says 2 7/8", and I was curious as to how that measurement was arrived at?
Is that measurement critical?
If it was more or less would that matter?

If the gear deflects too much farther it can pull the inner sliding tube
out. Geert had trouble with that and wrote it up in the archives. I
would guess that you want to set it up so the inner tube is at least 2"
or so into the outer tube at max deflection. Allow for a little
stretching and 2 7/8 sounds about right.

I have tried stretching my bungies to the max by hand and always come out with slack and it sits with a spread of almost two inches at the top of the tubes when I'm done.

Ian, thanks, my e-mail is alavigne@ntl.sympatico.ca (alavigne@ntl.sympatico.ca) .

I did get some info from Wray thompson and he sent me instructions and a sketch from Geert's site, as well as drawings for a jig used by Ron Barber.

It looks like there severall ways to put the bungies together and I guess I'll look at them all and figure out which suits me best. As for the rings, it looks like you need severall and I think they're quite pricey are they not.

Anyways if you have drawings and instructions I'll have a look.

Ian, where did you get the rings and how much were they, how many do I need?

A sketch of your jack set up would be great, thanks.

I bought a flying Rebel in 1998 as I have relatively no building skills,
patience or time and wanted to be flying. Never regretted it either. Love to
fly and have over 200 hours. It's a great little aircraft even though I only
have the AULA version with a 912 it does the job quite nicely. I sure
wouldn't mind having a 150hp under the hood mind you!!!, Maybe some day.

I desperately need bungee installation information. My initial installation
was via the three gorilla method to overpower the miserable things. Within
the first three or so hours of flying, I managed to pull the end through the
cone spring ends on two bungees. Am not looking forward to fighting this
battle again so soon.
Can you point me in the right direction?

Air Craft Spruce, Wag Areo and several other suppliers sell bungee rings,
pre made. That work and give you redundancy. P/N 9044. And I think Ray's Rebel
sight has an installation guide. Also (IF) I remember right Bob P. said you
could use a ratchet style tie down strap to stretch them out. put the bungee
ring on the top bolt hook the strap to the axle area and stretch the ring out
and wrestle it over the bottom bolt.

It would help if you put your name at the end of emails -

You have a major problem already - there should NOT be
any "cone spring ends" on your bungees !!! What kind of bungees
did you use ??? Hope they're not the 'automotive hold-down' type -
these are not nearly strong enough for this purpose !!!

Bungees on the Rebel should be complete rings - either
manufactured (part # 9044), or fabricated from the material supplied
with the kit - must be tied into loops with waxed string or fishing
line. You will need at least 3 rings on the front & 3 on the back
of each bolt pair. There's a drawing of a tool to fabricate rings
in the archives (oooopppps - WAS - will dig it out & re-load !)

As Phil mentioned, you can put the top of the loop over
the top bolt, then hook a ratchet 'come-along' or nylon tie-down
strap through it, with the other end at the bottom of the gear leg
tube, and crank to stretch the bungee. When it gets to the bottom
bolt, just use a large screwdriver to slip it onto the bolt.
It helps if you put the bolt in so the head (and washer) are
at the opposite side - for the first ones, anyway. You can get 2
loops on the bolt, then the 3rd loop must sit on top of the first
2, in the groove between them.
