List problems

Post by Bob Patterson » Fri Feb 17, 2012 10:00 pm

Hi Gang !!

It seems there are many of us who are not getting mail from
the list !! We can send, and see our mail posted on the web site,
(Only if we change to THREADED MODE) - but we don't get any EMAIL !!

Don't know if this is because of the recent changes, or
ISP problems, but this is the reason there's not much activity
lately !!

Have tried re-subscribing - still nothing ! Is ANYBODY
still receiving email from the dcsol list ???

Guess we'll have to wait for Mike to come back - it never
fails !! In the IT business, things can be perfect for years,
then you go away for a few days, and all hell breaks loose !!! :-)

Hey Gang, there where quite a few addresses marked inactive on the server...
this happens when a message is returned as undeliverable and can happen on
occasion. I have re-activated all accounts, and I've restarted the entire
system. This should take care of any problems with mail delivery. Sorry
for any inconvenience.

Brian & Pat Cross

List problems

Post by Brian & Pat Cross » Fri Feb 17, 2012 10:00 pm

Hi Bob & Company

Got the aircraft back with paint. It looks great but does not fly great at
all. The Sensenich is a real disappointment at this point. Pitch is 58".
I pressed the factory re: 60" and they said no.

Other than the fact that the prop is 1/ Heavy 2/ Not nearly as smooth,
(my six pack shakes quite a bit depending upon rpm), 3/ Much more lower
frequency noise & 4/ I am now unable to fly as fast as Rebels equipped with
Rotax 912s, I am very happy.

On the other hand, climb is fantastic but big deal, it is a Rebel, how much
climb does a guy living in Ontario need. Also, I would never reinstall a
Warp drive on my Rebel.

So how does it go, how many props does the average person install on their
aircraft? Is 3 the lucky number?

No way that I am flying to Sun 'n Fun now. I would only catch up to you
folks as you fly northbound with me flying southbound.

I am sure we will figure something out but it is a little disappointing. I
had a great flying aircraft that did not look great. Now I have a great
looking aircraft that does not fly great! Eventually I hope to have both.

Cheers

List problems

Post by Bob Patterson » Fri Feb 17, 2012 10:00 pm

Hi Brian !

Sorry to hear that !!! Are you sure it really IS 58" pitch ?
You could get the prop balanced (or at least checked) at Hope Aero,
or Leavens - or you could just try moving it over one hole on the
hub, to see if that helps.... It <IS> 74" length ?? Can you
still turn up to 2,700 rpm ?? With that prop, it's unlikely that
you should be able to ..

I have the 56" pitch, and 2,450 rpm gives only about 118 mph,
but I don't have fairings on my gear legs, so that should give back
10 mph or so ...

We could try the digital level to compare the 2 props, measuring
the blade angle - on the off chance something got mis-marked. Does
anyone in the chapter have a visual tach ?? That would be a good
way to check rpm - in case something changed on yours. Or maybe the
static ports are plugged with paint, and you're not really that slow ???
GPS would tell ...

Hope you can get it sorted out - call if I can help !

....bobp

PS
I can post to the list, but I'm not receiving ANY mail from
the REBEL List - I <DO> get mail from the Rebel-Ramble list !!

I wonder if the "test" messages I see are from others with
the same problem ?? Still not sure if it's possibly my ISP ...

Hi Brian, in brief, can you tell me why you would never use the Warp Drive
again? If it is the cracking at the hub, I understand and agree. If there is
another problem that I don't know about, I would like to hear it before I try
the Warp Drive I have.

List problems

Post by Mike Davis » Fri Feb 17, 2012 10:00 pm

Hi gang, I hope I have the list problem fixed for now... this was a tough
one because everything appeared to be working here, but in fact there was a
problem resolving where to send the outbound mail because of the new DSL
configuration. I have a work around in place that is getting the mail out,
and everything should look OK to you folks on the outside. I just had to
break things for me here locally... ah I love computers! Where else do you
find such a diverse range of products that all claim to work together, but
or course in real life seldom do?

List problems

Post by Brian & Pat Cross » Fri Feb 17, 2012 10:00 pm

Hi Bruce

Exactly right re: prop performance. Excellent climb but straight & level is
quite poor. I am sure that the Sensenich props are great. This must be
something basically wrong that I am missing. The paint shop put it on &
therefore I did not see how it was identified i.e. Is it really a 74x58?
Cannot believe that it is. There are too many happy REbel flyers out there
with this prop that it has to be some problem unique to my aircraft. The
plane itself is fine as it flew really well until I made the change.

I only made the change because of the problem with the Warp drive props on
0320 engines. My interest is having a decent cruise speed & to have no
worries re: the integrity of the prop. I had the speed but I also had
cracks - hence the change. I have no need to climb at 1700 fpm. I am at
circuit height before the end of the runway!

Your aircraft will be great. It is a great flyer & so much fun to handle in
the air.

As everyone says, keep building - you will love your aircraft.

List problems

Post by Rebflyer » Fri Feb 17, 2012 10:04 pm

Hi again, The Mcauley I had on 97MR at first was definetly not smooth at first either. I then had the prop balanced. It took 3 #3 penny washers to smooth it out. Yes the prop had been balanced at the local prop shop before original installation, and I even ro
tated it 180 deg with no help. At 2500 cruise rpm the vibration was uncomfortable, and 2400 rpm was ok. After the balance, 2600rpm was not even noticed it was so nice and smooth. The balance was done in three runs on the ground. After the initial run two was
hers were added, and I coud feel the difference on the ground! A third was added but I couldn't tell on the ground. I never flew it with the 2 washers. It flew great until I removed it for the Warp drive. The prop shop said they coud try to repitch it but the
y were pretty sure it wouldn't make it so I oppted for the Warp. So far so good. Did you have a problem with your's? I am loosing confidence in mine every day, even though I have the harmonic dampner. Oh well. Try the balance for the vibration. The cost here
was 120.00US Good luck Curt

Curt,

Last Summer I talked with Warp Drive at AirVenture and they were saying they would not sell props for ANY Lycoming engine, even with a prop dampener. That kind of a statement from the manufacturer would be enough for me to remove this prop from my plane b efore the next flight. You have more guts than I.

Hi Folks

That is just one reason, (and a very good reason), that I will never fly behind a Warp Drive prop on my Rebel again. The prop worked really well but for how long?

For me, it is not worth the risk.

Curt,

Last Summer I talked with Warp Drive at AirVenture and they were saying they would not sell props for ANY Lycoming engine, even with a prop dampener. That kind of a statement from the manufacturer would be enough for me to remove this prop from my plane b efore the next flight. You have more guts than I.

I don't imagine Daryl H. at Warp Drive is worried about a total failure, or they wouldn't continue to give guys replacement blades when these "cracks" are found. They are just minimizing the losses by not adding anymore "wood to the fire", that in time will have the buyer looking for a free replacement. You can only do that so many times before you lock your facilities doors. I suspect that the losses to date on returns/replacements has pretty much taken care of ANY profit that was made on them. Better to cut your losses and continue to supply the geared, lower HP engines until they get it all sorted out. FWIW I don't know of <ANY> blade loss on a Warp Drive propellor that uses their entire assembly. Can't say the same for NSI stuff that uses WD and another MFG's blades though. As for Jack Wiebes "failure" his son Mike was stranded in Kingston with minor delam' cracks at the root of the blades. Probably could have flown her home but was playing it safe and called around (including me) looking for a set of blades to get Mike and, more importantly, the Rebel home to Hamilton from Kingston.

Knock on wood, 7 years later and my 70" x 3 blade is still going strong on my Lycoming. First 200 hours on an O-235-C 100 HP and the last 100 or so on an O-320-C2A x 150 H.P. Still think they did me a favour when they supplied me with a "recommended" 70" prop, even though I wanted a 72" at the time! Got a feeling harmonics play a roll in this whole thing as much as anything!

(trust me, I certainly do inspect it before and after every flight though!!)

Cheers,

Hi Brian, in brief, can you tell me why you would never use the Warp Drive
again? If it is the cracking at the hub, I understand and agree. If there
is
another problem that I don't know about, I would like to hear it before I
try
the Warp Drive I have.

Scott
