FL-400 FLOAT "TAB" KIT
Posted: Fri Feb 17, 2012 9:59 pm
If anyone has received the FL-400 front float attach tab kit from MAM and it
came with AN6-16A bolts, AN365-624 nuts and AN960-616 washers (like mine
did), <<DO NOT>> UP-DRILL YOUR 5/16 holes to 3/8" and use these bolts/nuts.
They <MUST> stay at 5/16" as there is so little edge distance there as there
is, and I don't think you could turn the 3/8" nut anyhow!.
If you need the proper dozen AN5-16A bolts, AN365-524 nuts and AN960-516
washers just contact Elaine at MAM for your replacements. She already knows
they were the wrong bolts sent out to me, and presumably any others that
have ordered the FL-400 kit (they are following a packing list as I was
asked if I needed for a 2500 or 3500 because of the different lengths due to
the steel re-plates on the 3500).
I also gave this area more thought, as I had originally planned to do as Al
has done and make some nice clean slots for the tabs to stick through the
skin. However considering the (in my opinion) "daintyness" of these tabs
(that are lacking any edge distance), I think I will do as MAM has done and
cut a large hole so they can be inspected and removed easily if necessary.
Without the large hole there is no way to access these nuts for removal, or
to inspect the FL-400's. I know the normal landing force is up and against
the bolts so edge distance isn't a big concern, BUT you also have to
consider my EDO 3500 amphibs weight over 700lbs. Multiply by some G's and
it's a pretty good load as you pull up hard to clear the trees on the end of
a lake!! Or you stick the wheel gear into a good hole, at power, and the
fusleage wants to go forward without the floats! My 2 cents again, to the
side of caution!!!!!!
Keep at it guys/gals, it WILL be a great airplane when you get it all
together!!!
Cheers,
Wayne
