Our stab hinge halves did not line up "exactly". They were real close but I
had to ream them with a drill to get the bolts to go through. After doing
this the bolts slip right into the stab hinges but could be wiggled ever so
slightly. I imagine this is because one half of the hinge must now have a
slightly elongated hole. I did not ream the hinges on the elevator at all.
When I put the stab and elevator together some hinge bolts went through with
"gentle" taps, a couple had to be turned with a wrench to get them all the
way through. Now that the stab and elevator are together there is not any
movement in the hinges and the elevator seems to pivot freely.

Anyone else run into this?

Should I be concerned or move on?

Anyone thought about having a one piece hinge for the stab side milled?

I found it was pretty important to put an AN4 bolt (or at least a cleco if
hinge holes still slightly undersized when assembling) through the 2 halfs
while you bolt them up tight, to keep them aligned. Obviously too late for
you now, but thought others not there yet could use that information. I had
found most of the hinges, as bolted on to the semi finished tail feathers,
were out of "line" before I started the 3500 upgrades. When reinstalling in
the same holes I found they could be lined up by doing as above, when
bolting them back on. If you aren't going to add bushings at this point,
then let it go as you have it for now. Depending on how many hours a year
you put on it, it may just last 5 years before the wear gets a little high
and then you can ream and install bushings. Like I said before, just make
sure the bolts are tight and not rotating in the elevator/rudder hinges, to
keep all the wear happening to the easier to access stab/fin brackets to
allow for easy "bushing" later if required. And keep them well lubed at all
times. Very important especially if you are faced with outside storage.

I have been watching this discussion about elevator & rudder hinge bushings etc
with the interested eye of an Elite builder because the Elite has the same
setup.

First to Scotts' question, I expect your experience it typical, we had the same
issues with the Elite and did the same reaming out to get things to go
together. Note to MAM: perhaps there is a technique which could be included in
the manual to address this?? Perhaps we should have a bit of play in the hinge
half mounting holes and tighten all when the two parts are mated? This presumes
it is done the "Canadian" way before the pre-closing inspection.

Another thought, when we went to install the hinge halves to the Fin & Stab we
noticed that the pivot holes in the machined hinge halves from MAM didn't line
up when the parts were placed back to back and bolted to the R & S. We had to
drill/ream at this stage also. Perhaps it wold be better if MAM drilled the
pilot holes and had us do the final drill/ream when the parts are mounted?

Waynes' solution for the wear bushings looks interesting since it addresses the
wear issue as well as the thrust face wear issue we intended to address with the
nylon washer (in the rudder hinges, see our web site). Wayne, since you will
have the Sasquatch in the air soon, you will have to keep us up to date on how
the bushings work out :^)

I don't know about soon! When ever this truck shows up with my Floats on it
, there are also the parts in there from MAM to do a Rebel rebuild/repair
that is supposed to be done for the end of April. That will take priority
and the SR will of course be on hold. Then we are into spring "madness" with
Howard to get back into the water, the floats back onto FOKM, etc etc. Since
the SR is for me, at this stage, it is just being used as "filler" and the
customers will have to come first. The SR has a LOOOOONG way to go yet.

Thanks. The light came on after I turned off the computer last night and I
figured the bushings would fix it. When I am done screwing up the
fiberglass stab tips (Next post to the list) I will take it apart and do
that.
