I am installing an O-320 E3D in my Rebel. About a year or so ago there was a discussion on the use of light weight starters. I believe that Drew said that he was using a Toyota starter. I would appreciate feedback on what light weight starter are being used and how they are working out.

Light Weight Starters
Light Weight Starters
G'day from Sunny Australia Lonnie !
I rebuilt our 0-235 with the 9.7:1 HIGH compression pistons (hard to turn over)....
I used a ODYSSEY (I think that's how it's spelt) Battery ...700 AH...and a starter from a Datsun 280 ZX....cost $45 Australian (about $20 US)...and it WHIPS that high compression engine over like there's a hole in every piston crown...(and there isn't) :-)
Main point is to find a starter with the correct & matching TEETH design to suit your ring gear... MOST important !!!
Some teeth are VEE shaped and some are PARALLEL ....and you have to make the bracket to hold it obviously...as it looks NOTHIN' like a Lycoming starter !
Hope this helps
Rick & Wendy Harper
541R.....(not flying at present..'cause I'm in the middle of the first 100 hourly checks ! :-)

Rick,
Thanks for the reply. I have a nice 1982 280ZX sitting in the driveway, but it still need it's starter.
I did a search on the EAA Web page for "starters" and found two references. One of them was for an article in the March 1991 edition of Sport Aviation. I was happy to find that I still had that edition in my stack of old aviation magazines. It's a good article. The author, Ron Denight of Northglenn, Colorado, tells you what to look for, gives the stock numbers of some of the starters he has used and provides a drawing of a bracket that he used to mount Toyota starters.
Since the article was written over ten years ago there are probably a number of starters out there that could be used in addition to those mentioned in the article. I plan to take my ring gear and go visit a few junkyards.

Mark Landoll uses zx-280 starters for Lycomings. He advertises in Sport
Aviation and is the maker of the harmonic balancers some rebel are using. I
have one of his starters and have had NO trouble for 250+ hours on my O-290
Rebel.

Light Weight Starters
Hi Lonnie
Sorry for the slow reply. Yes the toyota starter works great. I used the
same plans as in sport aviation. Just make sure you count the teeth on the
ring gear and starter and follow ron's plans. I used a large peice of
aluminum angle 6"x4"x 3/8"for the bracket and I was able to do all the
machining required with a fly cutter and my drill press. The only trouble I
had was with the mounting bolt that falls behind the ring gear I had to
grind the bolt head to about half thickness and countersink the bracket in
order to get enough clearance. It sounds crude but you can make a nice flat
hole by using a spade bit. The starter with the bracket weighs about 7 1/2
lbs.
Drew Dalgleish
P.S. I'm also using a junkyard nipondenso alternator
