I have a chance to get a Lycoming O-320-A3A 150 hp engine. It is a conical
mount configuration. Has anyone tried to use one of these or similar on a
Rebel? I understand the speed cowling may not work. It also includes a
prop governor so I could go to a variable pitch prop. I am building an
Elite taildragger with eventual float configuration and can tolerate a
little more weight forward. Any cautions out there in Rebel-land?

Lycoming O-320 Conicl Mount
I use the 150 hp conical Lycoming on my Rebel. It also was initially set up
for constant speed, but I converted it to fixed pitch. It does work with the
speed cowl, but you have to make sure you get the right bottom half, as the
carb is further back and in the centre with this model. Also, there were 2
mounts available from MAM for this engine, and you need to get the one that
is 1 1/2 inches higher to fit the speed cowl.

I don't know why MAM would tell you that unless they no longer support that
version. I went through this many years ago (forget now, but must be at
least 6 years ago) with them. They originally had a conical mount that would
only fit the old nose bowl cowling. Then they made another one specifically
for the fibreglass speed cowl that raised the engine 1 1/12 inches. Also,
they made a separate bottom piece for the conical 0320 because of the
different carb location. I know, because that is what I have been using all
along. I'm sure I've heard of others on the list using this same
configuration.

Lycoming O-320 Conicl Mount
Hi Chuck !
Probably not a bad bet ! The conical mount engines can be
changed to Dynafocal fairly easily, if you want, but it should fit
right in. The O-320 mounts are the same as the O-235 mounts, so
that shouldn't be a problem either.
The speed cowl might be a problem - I understand there are
a couple of variants with different carb positions, and a couple
of different engine mounts to match up ...
If you're thinking floats, I would strongly recommend
using the "standard" cowl - it's MUCH easier to work on from floats.
You could use the Thorp T-18 nose bowl from Aircraft Spruce - it
is a bit sexier than the MAM Piper-style bowl. The advantage of the
aluminum cowl is that you can make it with double side hinges, so
you can have easy access to the whole engine by pulling two piano
hinge pins - it swings open top & bottom, and you aren't left holding
a large piece of fiberglass like the 'speed cowl' ....
The 150 hp. engines are first choice for floats, as they
are able to run regular car gas, which is about all you'll find
at most marinas. The 160 hp are higher compression, and need 100 LL....
Most of the Rebels up here run the 150 hp. O-320 for floats.

Yep, I have a 0-320 A2B in my Rebel. The speed cowl works ok, but I did have to make some adjustments in the nose bowl area to make that parallel with the spinner. The cowl comes with enough overlap to allow for alot of changes. The motor mount is critical
when ordering, as MAM used to have 2 different mounts for the conical style engine. The first one put the center of thrust line about 2" to low, at least the one I got to begin with. The carb is also not centered on the bottom of the sump, it is further to th
e rear. the only other thing I can think to ask is if it is a wide flange or narrow flange engine. Very basicly, large nuts on the cylinder bases or hex head bolts to hold the cylinder to the case. The wide base (large nuts) are prefered, but if the deal is g
ood enough......
