Rivets For Seat Belt Anchors

Hi Guys,

I would like to install the seat belt anchor angles under the floor
tomorrow. The manual does not call out the rivet type or size to use.
Murphy is not open to ask.

What did other super rebel builders use?

I would go with 3/16 rivets as a default.
It is good to keep the seat belts attached to the airframe.
Regular avex or stainless steel?
I like the way the avex pull much better but I assume the SS are stronger in
shear. ????

Does anyone know what Murphy wants us to use?

The Rebels seat belt attach plates are riveted in with RV1613's, so I figure
the SR is no different!

Rivets For Seat Belt Anchors

I am building an Elite and, unlike the Rebel, it has a massive 0.063 side
panel beneath each doors. I am trying to figure out a way to bolt the seat
belt directly to this and eliminate the irritating belt attach protrusion
that gets in the way every time you enter or exit a Rebel.. I think the
best way would be to attach the belt below the entry lip. The next best way
would be to use a link that would rotate out of the way on entry or exit.
Or I could leave it as designed until it neuters me.

Chuck, cut a plate of similar size that is suggested, but that will fits
below and allow the seat belts steel fitting to sit below the door sill. For
mounting the seat belt fitting you will need to install a 1/4" floating
anchor nut on the back of the fitting and cut a clearance hole for same in
the side panel. A LOT nicer on the butt when getting in. I just wish I had
of done this in my own Rebel and not just in all the others that came along
after it!

Rivets For Seat Belt Anchors

Hi Chuck !

There's a real easy way to avoid having your voice go
up thre octaves - just make the seat cushion at least 8 to 10"
thick !! ;-)

I've done this for all of our Rebels - it makes it easier
to get in and out, and greatly improves visibility & enjoyment
of flying !! Even the 6' 6" tall pilots seem to like it ....

I really don't like to tinker too much with a well proven
design - I've seen people walk away from some spectacular crashes
thanks to the Rebel belt setup (and the progressive-crumple airframe !) !
(see the photos of the Alaska crash in the Rebel archives !)

Rivets For Seat Belt Anchors

Hi Chuck,
I installed a larger plate and put a nutplate behind it, making an area behind that on the sidewall to accomadate the nut. I then use a bolt long enough to bottom out on the threads and still leave room for the seatbelt to swivel. It works great and I only scratch that spot when I want, not every time I get in and out.
