Hi Jim, I'm sending this to the list because this is a good question that I
don't think I have ever addressed. When uploading files and entering
descriptions these are the limits imposed.

The "Description" or short description can be up to 76 characters long and
is displayed in the normal file listing.

The "Long Description" can contain up to 15 lines of text with up to 80
characters on each line. The long description is displayed when you click
on "Desc" in the "Info" column of the file listing. If there is no long
description available the "Info" column will have "Info" instead of "Desc".

Your best bet when entering a truly long description is not to use the
return/enter key... just keep typing. If you enter 10 characters on a line
and hit return, you just lost 70 characters of space.

Hi Mike
Is there a character limit in the "Long description" box. I got "sniped"
in mid-sentence. It looks like a pretty big box with lots of space.

Mike, My long descriptions always have been snipped off and I never hit the
return key!

The one I just did yesterday on the heated pitot for example, that snipped
right in the middle of the word inspection.

Well you got me Wayne... the documentation said that the long description
would take 15 lines of 80 characters each. I duplicated the problem you had
below and in both my tests, and your heated pitot example the character
count including spaces was 256... a magic number with computers... that's 32
bits (if anyone cares).

After several experiments I found that upon hitting 256 characters without a
return it cuts it off. Putting in a return every 255 characters only
allowed me 15 lines. The 255 character entries between returns were
automatically line wrapped to lines of 80 characters or less.

So... what this all means is that we've found one more limitation that I
wasn't aware of and that is not documented. You will only get 15 lines of
up to 80 characters each, but you only get 256 characters between each
return and 15 x 80 is 1200... so there will have to be some returns in
there.

Putting it to practice... I'd never expect anyone to sit and count there
characters, but at 80 characters a line, 3 lines will give you 240
characters (remember it auto wraps). So if you hit return at the end of
every 3rd line you should be able to get a full 15 lines of text in there.
I know that's a real hassle, but if you've got something you need to say,
that should get it done for you.

Yeah... duh! What can I say, I wrote without thinking it through all the
way. I'm so used to working with network addresses that are 32 bits... four
8 bits words... each word 0-255... I saw 256 and 32 just popped into my
head.

I guess as long as we know how to get around it the clarity of my thought
process isn't to critical! :-)

Mike

I care, but...

8 bits = 2^8 = 256

16 bits = 2^16 = 65,536

32 bits = 2^32 = 4,294,967,296

:o)
;o)
