Of Pitot Tubes and Rivets

I got a very nice heated pitot tube kit from www.gretzaero.com and would
appreciate some advice from the experienced hands about where to mount it in
the left wing. I was thinking outboard in the next bay to the strut attach
fitting, but how far forward should it extend?

Also, I am wondering about installing the rivets in the top skin immediately
over the hinge attach brackers. There isn't enough clearance to get the rivet
all the way in, and I am curious if I should try to pull them hoping that the
rivet head will be pulled firmly down onto the skin.

Many thanks,
Jeffrey Steenson

Jeffery!

I can take a picture of the heated pitot tube on my Rebel for you tomorrow,
if I find the time, and will upload to dcsol and send to you personally.

As for the rivet that doesn't want to go in far enough to pull. Try this one
with a manual riveter and while pushing as hard as you can slowly pull the
handle to start the rivet pull. As it pulls (and gets shorter) you should be
able to get it to seat properly. Another trick is to hit the back of the
pneumatic puller with a plastic mallet as you pull the trigger. Takes good
timing, but sometimes works okay!

Hi Jeff !

I've been told that the best position for a pitot tube is
about 1/3 of the way back from the leading edge, and at least
3 inches down. The bay out from the strut attach sounds good.

You might want to mount the pitot to an inspection plate,
so you can easily remove it, and replace the tubing when needed.
The tubing usually runs down the strut, along with the wiring for
it and the nav/landing lights. Bringing everything in at the
bottom of the strut makes it a lot easier to run it up to the
instruments & switches - MUCH tidier than up top ! You will
need couplers - both wiring and tubes - possibly at both ends
of the strut, for quick removal. Couplings for the tube can
be sourced from a glider instrument company, if not found elsewhere.

I've had good luck rivetting with little back clearance
by inserting the rivet as far as possible, then pushing it in
with the hand rivetter while slowly pulling it. The rivet usually
squeezes a bit, allowing me to push it all the way in before
the final pull & pop. Good luck !!

Jeffery, One other trick you can try, and I have done this in the past when
it is not critical structurally,- is to remove the center stem from the
rivet, cut the length down on the rivet shank, re-insert the stem, and
proceed as normal. (dip, insert, and squeeze) Bob J Rebel 652--Flying

Jeffrey,
We put our pitot tip just about even with the wing leading edge and located
so that it is possible to reach through the strut access hole and replace
the tubing if necessary. Also, that makes it convienient to run the wiring
an tubing down the strut. Near the strut may also make it less likely to
be walked into but the unobservant.

We took another tack on the rivets over the hinges. The mandrels were
removed and the rivets shortened on the belt sander and the mandrels
replaced. Not my first choice but ours were really tight and every attemp
gave us a proud rivet. The resulting heads were quite adequate in
appearance. One final cmment before you close it up. Wayne O'Shea has
recommended using nutplates on the hinges and it is worthwhile. The access
to the hinge attachment nuts is almost impossible in the torque tube area.

Thank you, Wayne, BobP, and BobJ, for your advice. I would very much
welcome a picture of your pitot mast installation, Wayne. What great souls
you all are!
Jeffrey
