SR Roof Flap Actuator/SleepArea

Hi Mike,

You say:
I am using a roof mounted flap actuator so the flap cable that would normally
be in the way (in the tail cone) on an SR won't be there.
I would also like to keep this area clear for potential sleeping use. Can
you give details of your alternative flap system.

SR Roof Flap Actuator/SleepArea

Haven't figured that out yet, but I heard that the prototype Super Rebel had
it up there at one time so it has been done before. Both Rob Merdes (the
other Fairbanks SR builder) and I plan to put the handle on the roof so we
will probably be bouncing ideas off of each other. I'll keep the list up to
date with what we come up with. One caution: The reason MAM moved it to
the floor was due to a hard pull to get the flaps down with the short handle
on the roof. Rob was told ages ago by someone at MAM that it was hard to
pull, but doable unless you are 5'4" and weigh less than 100 pounds. Rob
and I have decided to live with the occasional workout in flight to gain the
advantage of getting the big stick out of the way on the floor. I am toying
with a spring concept that would help put the flaps down. It might take
some experimentation to get just the right spring so that aerodynamic forces
on the flap will help me overcome the spring to put the flaps up. Or maybe
I'll just be a macho man and learn to pull hard. Can't be much worse than
raising the gear on a Mooney Ranger with the manual gear retract. Maybe
I'll learn to slow to MCA prior to selecting full flaps. Yeah, minimum
controllable airspeed on downwind. That's the ticket...:-)

I left the flap handle on the floor but used a teleflex cable to actuate the
flaps. Keeping everything on the inside, no cable on the outside of the
fuselage. I'm installing flaps this week will see if it works.
