Last year I believe there was a Super Rebel in the Ontario area that was
near flying with a Crossflow Subaru 3.3L conversion. Does anyone know
anything further about this, or any other Crossflow installations? I think
you told me about this one Bob... any comments?

Don't know about Ontario, but the folks at Crossflow told me
that they had one SR just about to fly, and another that's a few
months away. The fellow I talk to at Crossflow is on his way to
Alaska right now, as far as I know - went up to look after a
customer who's ready for first flight. They did that for the
Rebel in Newfoundland that I test-flew about 5 years ago, too.
Jorge stayed for 3 days, just to make sure everything was OK -
it actually only took him a few minutes to tweak the engine,
just by plugging in his laptop computer....

There are several Crossflow 4 cylinders flying - don't
know how many 6's.

visit and who paid for it??

Murphy USE TO have a pilot that for cost would test fly you're plane and recommend tweaks if needed. But I think the insurance thing was to much for them to absorb.
Cross Flow Want's to make sure their product is RIGHT so there's no negative feedback. That's just taking care of you're customers.

Also no different than Murphy having George Coy's "man" in house at MAM to help with the M14 installation and he even went along for the flight with Robin, from Chillywack to Sun and Fun! Better someone that knows the installation doing the "tweaking" to get it right, instead of someone playing with the unknown and making it a death trap!

Of course I could be wrong with Crossflow, but I figure Jorge's extra "touch" with his laptop for optimum performance is no different than me doing the initial test flights and engine break-in on any engine upgrade I install, or on an Rebel I have a major part in! This just gives the customer a warm fuzzy feeling that if the guy that installed it has no hesitation fly it, it must be done right! Yah I know, it may not always be the case but it's a lot better than some mfg's and installers that won't even get in the aircraft after an engine installation (like one of my local AMEs and many others I've heard of that will not fly in or behind their work!)

Yes it certainly is nice to have the expert stamp of approval and fine
tuning.

However, one way or the other the purchaser pays for the visit and some
would choose to avoid an unanticipated visit it if they had the choice
or if they did not require it. Will repeat visits be required as the
engine "ages" and will he still be in business? There are good engine
management systems out there that are easy to tune by the purchaser
(such as SDS), or that inherently do not require tuning (such as the oem
Subaru self learning computer). I think even a highly specialized system
should at least interface with the factory via modem for most problems
and that it should only very very rarely require a personal visit from a
factory rep, especially on a brand new complete system.

I've no doubt that Crossflow does indeed provide an elite high
performance highly tuned firewall forward package but one might also
want to talk to some purchasers and be sure you are comfortable with the
implications of that. Highly tuned specialized racing cars that can only
be worked on at the factory are not necessarilly the best car to drive
to work every day but they can sure be fun. :)

I've written 2 e-mails to Crossflow now asking for customer references and
not gotten any response back. In the past when I have written and I always
got a response. I'm not sure what to think of it... I hope Jorge is out on
vacation or traveling on business this week... or some understandable reason
not to be responding. I'll give him a week then call.

As for still being in business down the road, from what I understand Jorge
is the second generation in this engine building business... that doesn't
mean that they'll be there for ever, but I think it shows that they've got a
lot of experience and have been successful thus far.

performance highly tuned firewall forward package but one might also
want to talk to some purchasers and be sure you are comfortable with the
implications of that. Highly tuned specialized racing cars that can only
