G'day

Today I finished the reinforcing fix to the Fus 30. (It was a most trying day with the temperature in my shed of +39oC)

However I have a question regarding the fitting of TS-2-1. After adding the doubler, the TS-2-1 does not fit as it did and is now about 3/16" away from it.

Should I make up some packers to keep TS-2-1 away from the fuse doubler, or should it rest hard against it?

The manual seems to show some daylight between it and the fuse.

Does any one have a safe way to alter the lengths of the horizontal supports?

I would appreciate some thoughts.
Thanks and regards

Ian Donaldson

Ian,
I feel your pain, although not quite as cold here in northeast USA (around 0 C this week), the pain from the Rebel is at least as great.
Without reliving the agony of rebuilding all of the TS parts to accomodate the additional width of the doubler, I added the doubler before I mounted the horizontal stabs. Therefore, I did not have to rebuild my struts. If you have moved the TS-3 lower you will need to lengthen those struts to keep the stabs level. I did not use the stock struts. I used 3/4 OD x 5/8 ID 4130 steel tube and made 5/8 dia 2024 alum end pieces to fit into the tubing. The factory end pieces, as received from MAC were gouged and scored beyond reasonable limits. The end pieces are bolted to the tubing with AN-3 bolts. My TS-3 is also a piece of 4130 steel angle that I had bent up.
My TS-2 that spans the two bolts is about 1/8" below the bottom of the tail wrap doubler (around FUS-30). My new custom built TS-1's are mounted about 1/16" below the doubler and I put an individual shim between the TS-1 and the TS-2. The shims are about 1/16" thick. The shims are tapered and are there to allow the bolts to remain straight when they are tightened. I have seen some Rebels with these bolts horribly bent due to misaligned components in this area. On some updated plans that I received from the factory, dated 7/19/95, there is a 3/16" thick spacer bar (TS-7) that spans the bolts and is the first piece that sits against the bottoms of TS-1, the next piece below that is the TS-2. I think this was done to accomodate a different tail spring. The bolt size was also increased to a AN-4 size from AN-3.
Spacing the TS-2 too far down without being tied close to the TS-1 will load those bolts differently and you should seek and only accept qualified advice for your solution. Above I have given you an account of my developments and are not intended as solutions for other builders.
Good luck you'll need it,
Rick D.

Howdy Ian !....Rick here...

I've just had to remake those bits again due to adding the extra tailwrap as well...(also in HOT / sticky
conditions :-(

I'm making all those pieces in STAINLESS STEEL ....(I have a need for more tailweight anyway)
you can alter the strut length by altering the length of the right angle part that supports each stabiliser strut......thats how I'm getting around THAT problem !

Other than that...all looks GREAT.....It'll be a case of ............

I was not happy till I remade those parts either. I did increase the
bolt size to 1/4" and increased their length for a rudder stop. The
thing is, now I think I'd like a little more rudder movement. So I'm
thinking of putting a short piece of 3/4" angle on the top of shorter
bolts there to allow a little more deflection?? I think Bobp's plane is
done like that.

BTW I think your computer clock is off by a couple of weeks.

Ken
By the time I added my .040" doubler, the holes in the "TS" bits didn't
line up (sideways) anymore... THATS why I had to remake all those bits
