You've got a good point Gordon! I have seen 3 Zenair CH701's that broke the
left pedal arm off. Luckily my Father-in-law's did so as he was turning
around at the end of our strip, preparing for take off. The other two were
in the air and luckily made successful forced landings. That is one pitfall
of Zenairs all "flying" rudder/stabilizer. If the cables go loose it becomes
a fluttering nightmare! The only way to fly it is to hold the other pedal to
the floor to try and hold the rudder in one place and use full opposite
stick to keep going straight. Next find something flat quick because you are
now going down at 1000+FPM.
I don't think it's as much of an issue with the Rebel though, as you are
only operating the rudder and tailwheel. The Zenairs are broken by forcing
the nose wheel to turn (direct positive attachment) before you start moving
and their pedal assemblies are mfg'd from lighter/smaller diameter tubing.
You have definitely taken care of the problem for good with yours though,
going off the center pedals. I haven't noticed any deformation of the pedals
in mine, or any I have worked on, and this is a normal area for me to
inspect after the experience with the 701's.
Take care,

I'm wondering how much extra stress is placed on the rudder pedal
assembly,
especially the welded joints, by extending the end of the tube to move the
cable further outboard. Trace out the load path, especially for the right
rudder. I didn't like the cable angle either but I also didn't like the
cable mounted to the end of the tube. My Rebel has the rudder cables
attached in the middle, with the cables running down the centre of the
fuselage floor along side the elevator cables.
