split flap aileron

Hi folks,
I'm new to the Murphy list and am considering a Rebel. I'm coming from a Kolb
Firestar, which I had found to make a great bush plane (see
http://mae.ucdavis.edu/~ransom ), and I'm hooked on flying that is better than
pavement-to-pavement. I just recently got my private ticket and out of the
vast number of project choices, the Rebel seems to be the right match for what
I'd like to do next.

Anyway, enf of an introduction. One of many questions: What are the trade-
offs between full length flaperons and split flap/ailerons on the Rebel?

Ben ; Yes definitely-Go with the full span flaperons. That is the way the
Rebel was designed and it is a great performer. The Elite was designed with
the splits and it added more weight and less short field capabilities.

Hi Ben !

Welcome to the list, and congratulations on picking the Rebel !
It's a GREAT airplane ! You'll find all the answers you need right here,
and you can search the arcived files for past solutions, and pictures too !
(All thanks to Mike Davis - who's going to have one GREAT Rebel one day,
incorporating all the experiences of the rest of us ! ;-) )

The split flaps will give you half the ailerons and half the
flaps - (ie - not enough of either ! Don't do it !!) This WAS an
often-requested option for those coming from the "Cessna did it so it
must be good" school ..... BEFORE they flew the Rebel !!

Hi Ben,

I would stick with the Full flaps like everyone is saying. It seems to be the
best of both worlds. I'm not flying the Rebel yet but have a Kitfox with
flaperons and think there great.
Every one seems to think the same way.

Bill,
Thanks a lot, I'll look forward to taking you up on your offer.

Thanks to the others who commented too on this question. It is funny how
there gets to be an option, that even costs a good chunk of change, probably
adds a bit of weight and additional work, and it wasn't even broke in the
first place.

Hi Ben !

You're right !! It's the old "Cessna did it so it must
be good" thing, combined with "The customers asked for it, and
the customer is always right" ! ( Just like the spring gear,
and the high rounded top instrument panel ... )

I loved the comment from one builder -

"Don't be like the government, and keep fixing something until
it's broke !!" :-) :-) :-)
