landing light/Strobes

Hi Bob,

A busy night,
Landing lights for the SR. We purchased two light units to install in the
wing bays (one unit in each wing, each unit housing two bulbs) from MAM.
Then MAM came out with the tip light which we liked and where going to buy
from MAM. Then we started to think that maybe Four Lamps, (two in each wing)
might be the way to go after all ... the more is better thing. Of course we
would use Halogen bulbs GE H-7604 (4.5") and possibly incorporate AvTek's
Pulsar system. The jury is still out on this one. We may even wait till
after first flight to worry about it. Access does not seem to be
significantly affected by waiting.

Bob, your comment.
"Of course, you'd use your present tips, and buy the lights from
Canadian Tire - they're easy to mount, and you just make a Lexan
cover as you would for the wing-mounted lights". Can you purchase the units
MAM is using in their wing tips or are you talking an alternative? And
secondly the Lexan Cover that MAM is using is a compound curve. How easy to
make on your own?

And while we are on the subject of lighting. I installed Whelen A600 tip
Light/Strobes with wing tip power packs on my CH 701. I see that Aeroflash
has a tip unit that looks physically the same as the Whelen unit. The power
packs puts out less joules, I think Whelen 34 joules and Aeroflash,
something like 10 joules. The cost $890 vs $430 Anyone have any experience?
Will the Aeroflash units keep you from getting run into ??? The price
difference makes the Aeroflash product tempting.

Don and ALL!

I don't know why people waste HUNDREDS of dollars on "pulse" light systems
to flash their landing lights. This can be done for $1.49 with a 60's/70's
Chrysler two terminal signal light flasher unit, which will flash them all
on and off at the same time, or for maybe $2 more you can go with a fancy GM
unit that has a two sided output so you can flash one wing then the other
(like a 90's GMC sierra pickup where the front facing light flashes, then
the side panel light). To have a steady landing light another switch is used
to bridge the input/outputs on the flasher unit. Simple as that and easy to
fix if it ever burns out (just unplug and replace, just like your car!)!
With 4 lights you would probably need the "trailer" version of either
flasher unit.

I have bought and installed the Aeroflash units on a few Rebels so far. The
ones with the tip power pack for each side so only a single 12v line needs
to be run out to the tip instead of the high voltage shielded 1/4" cable
that WAS the norm. The ones I have used were the combo Position/nav/strobe
and they work GREAT. They also are great to deal with for warrantee. Had one
unit stop working (more than a year after purchase from ACS and sent the
power supply to them in Chicago via the mail and got it back prepaid and N/C
about 8 days later fixed. To compare pricing when a bulb is required! Bought
a flash tube for FOKM when Bob and myself "traded" aircraft and it cost
$159Cdn Wholesale! Bought an Aeroflash bulb direct from the Aeroflash
factory and it was around $30 US (about $47 Cdn right now).

Aeroflash is on line at www.aeroflash.com I buy direct as a business, but
don't think they sell direct to public. If you use your computer and make
yourself a company letter head, to write your fax order on, they will never
know! Just fill out the order and fax it off to them. Just check pricing
from them and ACS. Maybe ACS has a volume deal, but I bet cheaper direct and
no waiting if not in stock at ACS. That happened to me the first set I
bought when I didn't know any better. ACS back ordered my shipment while
they ordered some more from Chicago. The lights have more miles on them than
the aircraft does!

Hi Don !

By all means, go with the Aeroflash units ! I hear they have
a new streamlined stobe cover that's 'way prettier than the Whelen ....
and the price is right ! They're not as bright as the Whelen, but
they are adequate for visibility purposes, and I hear you can increase
brightness by buying the 'more expensive' flash tubes, if you want.
The combo nav & strobe is the best way to go, although you might
want to put a strobe on the tail as well, for all-round coverage.

There's no question that flashing the landing lights can
REALLY increase your visibility - but do as Wayne suggests... the
truck flashers do the job for a fraction of the cost !

As for the tips --- I believe that Dave Fife, who
makes those marvelous Hoerner tips for the Rebel, is ready to
try a set for the Super, now that Murphy have gone ahead and done
it (after advising him not to !). Dave already has a landing light
add-on for the Rebel tips, using <very> inexpensive halogen units,
2 per tip - this whole assembly just MIGHT fit on a Super ....
(If someone wants to volunteer - Dave's address is:
aircrafttips@yahoo.com)

(There - got you in trouble again Dave ! ;-) )

In any case, I'd prefer putting the lights in the tips to
cutting up the wing - and the wiring will be easier to replace later.
Those small round lights Dave was experimenting with go for about
$5 each, and put out about 55 Watts - there are already several
aircraft around here using them - some sprinkled in the cowling,
as well as wing tips, giving redundancy AND more visibility !

Don;
I use 2 12-volt halogen lights that I bought from Home Depot for $9.99.
They are used as ceiling trac lights. Because they are not affected by
vibration, they are mounted in the cowl. One is a 20-watt flood, used for
taxiing, the other is a 35-watt spot, used as a landing light. The taxi
light is also connected to an electronic turn-flasher that I got from NAPA
auto parts. The electronic unit will handle prolonged flashing better than a
regular flasher. The halogen bulbs are good for 4000 hours.
