M14P, STARTING WITH A SNAP: The M14P radial (engine of choice on Pitts
Model 12s, Culp's Specials and a number of Eastern European aircraft
including the Yak-50 and -52) is now available in an easy-start electric
version instead of the old air-start. U.S. distributor George Coy of
Gesoco Industries says the first electric-start engines will be going to
kit builders who are fitting M14Ps on their Murphy Super Rebels.

M14P, STARTING WITH A SNAP: The M14P radial

FWIW, I'd be <VERY> careful of this one !!! Every attempt
to "improve" the M-14 has been a degradation in <ease of use>. The
switch from mechanical to electrical primer just added weight, confusion,
and extra systems to maintain - by all accounts, the mechanical
primer was simple and solidly reliable !

I've heard stories of melted starters ! The air start system
is actually very efficient, light, and works even at minus 50 degrees !
Just because "Cessna didn't do it, so it can't be any good" thinking is
everywhere, it isn't necessarily correct !!

Let <somebody else> try one of these and report after some
hours of use before you plunk down your cash - it might be a great
mod, maybe, possibly .... but remember, you'll need extra wiring
and a MUCH larger, heavier battery !!

.....bobp

PS
For most people, the Super Rebel flies JUST GREAT with the
O-540 of 250 hp (it's NOT a C-180 !) - I personally am not convinced
that the extra aggravations of running the radial are worth the effort !!
(Just MHO ....) :-)
The second SR got off the ground in 300 ft, climbed at 1,500 +,
cruised over 150 mph, and easily carried 4 big guys, plus baggage,
burning as low as 12-13 gph., with the IO-540.....

Those who have seen/flown original Rebels with the Rotax 912
of 80 hp. are amazed that it performs so well on such an economical engine !
If you just want cheap fun flying, don't go for the 'hot rod' !
