flap/aileron hinge shims on SR - ANCHOR NUTS

Jason, that is why I have been trying to convince everyone building a Rebel,
Elite or an SR to go with my idea of installing one lug anchor nuts for
aileron/flap hinge attachment (vs the manual spelled out AN365-1032 nuts).
This allows shimming "after the fact" and allows bolt/hinge removal (without
the need for access to a nut) if you ever damage a hinge due to
"unforgiving" circumstances. When the anchor nuts in the fuel tank are
installed you thread an AN3 bolt in as far as it will go prior to coating
and filleting your tank edges with Proseal and leave it in till it tacks up.
Then you remove the bolt slowly to avoid twisting the proseal blob. To be
absolutely sure that it's sealed, the next time you have proseal mixed up
you recoat over the anchor nut area in case removing the bolt put a crack or
similar in the proseal. Now you can take the hinge brackets on and off to
your hearts content without any need to get inside the wing. As a bonus,
doing this also negates the need to cut all those little access holes and
doubler plates in the lower wings skin, next to the rear spar, as shown in
the manual!

I will post a picture of what I'm talking about, to the SR wing section on
the dcsol site! They are installed with only one rivet in the outer hole,
with the rivet installed from the INSIDE. This allows the shim to clear the
rivet. If installed from the outside the shim will sit on top of the mfg'd
rivet head, thus interfering.

I still have some of the heavy duty S.S. 10/32 one lug anchors available,
but I am getting down in inventory close to the point that I will be keeping
the rest for myself for future projects. I don't know of any supplier that
supplies this heavy of "unit" anymore, so not going to leave myself out of
stock because I was helping out too many builders with their wings! Measly
$1.50 each Canadian, plus postage and handling. If anyone is interested in
buying some, please send e-mail directly to me at oifa@irishfield.on.ca

Subject: flap/aileron hinge shims on SR

Hi all,

Need some clarification here:

Manual says to use shims under the flap and aileron
hinges on the rear spar in order to line them up. This
can be difficult after the fact as two hinges on my SR
with extended tanks will be all prosealed up.

Have you guys found them necessary?

-Jason

I used nut plates, the ones used have a sealed can over the nut area of the
