Wingtip and W-609

I've encountered an interesting problem preparing the sub-assembly for the
right wingtip. W-609 is about 3/4" too short for W-606R to clear the aileron
spade. I assume this is because the rib flanges on the right wing face
outward, so W-609 is seated further inward by the length of the rib flange.
Should I rivet on a small extension to W-609 on which to rivet W-606R to
insure the proper clearance? Or should MAM be supplying W-609s in right and
left versions?

The manual is a little vague in calling out the trimming of the wingtip
itself. Obviously the bottom only gets trimmed in the spade area, but there
is a whole lot more than 12" (as the manual calls for) from the front of the
spade to the trailing edge of the aileron.

Happy Thanksgiving!

Wingtip and W-609

You are right as to the source of the clearance problem. We did add an
extension to the rear spar to make up the flange width. Not pretty but
functional. This is an area where the cost saving of the one part is a
builders headache. We also had to cut off the straight flange on the half
rib in the outboard rear of the wing tip and make and rivet a new flange as
the supplied rib would not fit inside the tip. We used a die grinder with
cutoff wheel to make the cutout in the fiberglass tip (Wear a respirator!)
and went at it slowly with rough and several finish cuts. I suggest
fitting the aileron as many times as necessary to be sure everything
clears.

Wingtip and W-609

Dear Ralph,

Thanks for replying with your solution. The more I studied the pictures of
the wingtip install the factory included on the CD-Rom of the manual (it's a
Super Rebel tip), the more it appears that MAM has done the same thing.

Yes, it looks like December will be a Dremel month getting the fiberglass
properly shaped! I have the new landing lights, and the assembly seems to fit
perfectly into the wingtip. It is very high quality work, from an Oregon
company, RMD Aircraft Lighting. Another advantage of the wingtip lights is
that by mounting the assembly with screws and nutplates, I can gain access to
wiring and power supply. That way I think I will go ahead and rivet the
wingtip rather than use clipnuts, etc.

Certainly appreciate the reply.
