The Murphy Builders Site

Trying to figure out what the propeller clearance is in the level attitude
of the SR with the M14. I am looking at a larger diameter prop than the two
blade.

The numbers I just got from Murphy are 18 inch clearance in the three point
attitude and 15 inches (they said approximately 15") in the level attitude.

I scratched my head all morning and don't think it is possible to go down
only 3 inches from three point to level? Since I don't have the fuselage
all my numbers where estimates scaled off of a side view and using different
estimated angles between three point and level.

I always come up with a drop from between 10 and 14 inches??

It should be a fairly similar drop with any type of engine, depending on the
difference in distance from center of rotation to the prop.

So, finally to my question: Has any measured the actual difference between
level and three point on a SR (of any engine configuration) so I could do
some comparisons??

SR3500 gear legs??? Do you know the length of the M14's prop?

I ask, as I'm now the owner of a partially completed SR, and if I take it to
completion will be most likely installing the M462RF (315HP) that I obtained
with it, along with the V530 metal 2 blade prop that is 106" long (2" less
than 9 feet!). I am curious about sufficient clearance when wheel landing.

I thought that the M14's prop was longer than 96", since that is 2" smaller
in diameter than my 3 blade Hartzells on the GSO480 geared engine UTVA 66's
that I have. I think/hope Grant was reminiscing about the 3 blade Hartzell
they had on the O-540, but on the other hand seems a little long for the
direct drive engine. I will do some more digging (or wait for some more
details from the list) as I thought the M14's prop was either 102 or 104".
Considering the prop that I have is 106 1/2" long that would only leave me
3.75 inches of clearance, with the tail up 30 inches, if they based the
clearance numbers on a 96" prop. Hope the numbers are wrong, or I will have
to turn the tread off some truck tires like they did for the Sherpa, because
I very rarely fly off of pavement (wouldn't that be wild and also require a
ladder to get in!)! Not even considering cutting down the prop length, on
those 10" chord blades!

Hi Wayne, according to Murphy's web site, the Hartzell constant speed props
that they sell for the SR are 84" in both 2 and 3 blade configuration. They
also say on their web site that their M-14P is turning a 94" propeller at
1900 RPM. Seems to be some confusion with Grant saying it is 96"... either
way, looks like it's considerably less than your 106".

Oops, that was supposed to be 2900 RPM! It's right above the picture of the
demonstrator with the fork lift hooked to it's tail, and two folks laying
across it trying to keep it down... looked very windy, and very wet!
