need advice on drilling SR wing ribs

Posted: Fri Feb 17, 2012 9:21 pm

Hi all,

I can't figure this one out. I need to drill the ribs
on my SR wing to attach to the spar. However, my
silver clecos aren't long enough to clamp all the ribs
and shims to the spar at the same time.

If I can just get a few holes at no. 11 through
everything, I can bolt them together temporarily to
drill the rest.

Any hints?

-Jason

try this trick Jason use extra 3/32 drills bit through all the holes to
line everything up then clamp it all together with C clamps or I like quick
grip clamps with their smooth jaws even better
Hope this helps

When I was helping Mike Kimball do that section last winter he used long
screws, probably like a number 4 with wing nuts on them. Cheap and easy to
come by, and they sure pulled everything together tight.

The trick we used was to pre drill the shims on the drill press to 3/32 and
fit the ribs and cleco from both sides on different holes assemble and
drill to 1/8", then use long wingnut type clecos. A few long wingnut
cleco's in 1/8 and 3/16 were very usefull, also used lots of 3/16 hardware
store bolts with double nuts and aluminum washers as clamps. As best I
remember from 3yrs ago.

need advice on drilling SR wing ribs

Jason,

You might try the following or some variation:

1) Drill the LE ribs without shims to #40 to establish position.

2) Drill the main ribs without shims to #40 to establish position.

Note: It is difficult to see the flange center line on the ribs through a
#40 hole where the spar is several layers thick. Hole position is the same
at all stations, so you can drill all of the ribs to #40 at a station where
the spar is a single layer thick.

3) Drill the LE ribs, shims and spar to #30 at 4 alternating holes at each
station.

4) Drill the main ribs and shims to #30 through the #30 holes in the spar
holding position with #40 clecos. Drill the remaining 4 holes to #30.

5) Drill the remaining #40 holes in the LE ribs and shims to #30.

Note: You can acquire a number of spring loaded, 1/2" grip clecos to
facilitate these operations. These 1/2" grip length #40 and #30 clecos will
work for this even though they are not really gripping completely.

6) Drill #30 holes to #11 with all parts in place.

Note: You can also acquire some #30 and #11 wing nut clecos with a 1 inch
grip length. Once all the holes are drilled to #30, use the # 30 wing nut
type clecos to hold the LE ribs, main ribs and shims together for drilling
to #11.

I suspect that there are more elegant and/or cheaper and/or easier solutions
but this worked for me. Hope it helps.

Cheers, rj
