FUS-30 DAMAGE/REPAIR
FUS-30 DAMAGE/REPAIR
Thought I would let everyone know that I have posted 3 pictures to the
Rebel-Fuselage "file".
Many builders in the past few years have asked if there was any positive
proof for the need to reinforce the FUS-30, from in front of the tail spring
attach bulkhead to the fin tailpost, as Bob and myself have been suggesting
to all the builders we've had the privilege to meet/greet over the past MANY
years. I have uploaded the pictures so you don't have to take our word for
it anymore!! Two recent aircraft through my shop have allowed me to get some
shots.
One picture shows a buckled FUS-30. The reinforcement shown in the picture
that was installed by the builder(s) was useless, as it was installed
between the spring attach bulkhead (SAB) and the TS-1's. It did not overlap
the tail post or the SAB at all, so didn't offer any additional strength to
the area.
Another picture shows a cracked FUS-30. This seems to have been caused by a
loosely held tail spring rocking back and forth with a one sided fork Maule
tailwheel. These Maule tailwheels do cause some extra twisting motion on the
tailspring due to the one sided fork, so try to avoid their usage if you
can. If it's a deal you can't refuse, make sure the Tspring is tight and you
have done the FUS-30 doubler.
Third picture shows the cracked FUS-30 repaired with the suggested FUS-30
doubler to prevent the cracking or buckling, that should be built into EVERY
new fuselage that you guys and gals are putting together.

Wayne G. O'Shea

Wayne, curious to know if you have seem this problem on float planes as
well. This is one fix I still haven't applied, but intend to, and just
wondering how urgent it is if on floats. I check mine all the time, and so
far have not seen any deformation in the area. I have the other tail post
fix applied.

FUS-30 DAMAGE/REPAIR
Walter, shouldn't be a problem unless you flare at a REALLY intense angle
(and bang the tail), or buy a "beta" capable prop and back into a boat
house!!! Strictly a tailwheel "load" associated problem. The SB on the
tailpost to FUS-31 however (that you say you have complied with) is strictly
(90% anyhow) an air load created problem, as it happened to Howard's while
strictly being flown on floats.

FUS-30 DAMAGE/REPAIR
Mike, the SR tailspring is totally different so no need for a doubler as
shown in the FUS-30 pictures. The SR uses a "rod" style tailspring that does
not push up against the fin tailpost. Would suspect the SR tailcone is
strong enough, as designed by MAM, but only rough field usage will tell.
After all the SR was designed for higher HP/weights. Remember the original
Rebel design was for a 80 H.P. Rotax 912 and a gross of 1200 pounds. Now
that we have 150/180 hp and a gross of 1650, a "few" things need to be
beefed up from the original design!!

Subject: FUS-30 DAMAGE/REPAIR
Thought I would let everyone know that I have posted 3 pictures to the
Rebel-Fuselage "file".
Many builders in the past few years have asked if there was any positive
proof for the need to reinforce the FUS-30, from in front of the tail
suggestingattach bulkhead to the fin tailpost, as Bob and myself have been
MANYto all the builders we've had the privilege to meet/greet over the past
someyears. I have uploaded the pictures so you don't have to take our word for
it anymore!! Two recent aircraft through my shop have allowed me to get
overlapshots.
One picture shows a buckled FUS-30. The reinforcement shown in the picture
that was installed by the builder(s) was useless, as it was installed
between the spring attach bulkhead (SAB) and the TS-1's. It did not
tothe tail post or the SAB at all, so didn't offer any additional strength
athe area.
Another picture shows a cracked FUS-30. This seems to have been caused by
Mauleloosely held tail spring rocking back and forth with a one sided fork
thetailwheel. These Maule tailwheels do cause some extra twisting motion on
youtailspring due to the one sided fork, so try to avoid their usage if you
can. If it's a deal you can't refuse, make sure the Tspring is tight and
EVERYhave done the FUS-30 doubler.
Third picture shows the cracked FUS-30 repaired with the suggested FUS-30
doubler to prevent the cracking or buckling, that should be built into
**new fuselage that you guys and gals are putting together.

FUS-30 DAMAGE/REPAIR
The Elite uses the same rod tailspring as the Super Rebel so Wayne's words
probably apply to it as well, for you Elite builders.

doesMike, the SR tailspring is totally different so no need for a doubler as
shown in the FUS-30 pictures. The SR uses a "rod" style tailspring that
fornot push up against the fin tailpost. Would suspect the SR tailcone is
strong enough, as designed by MAM, but only rough field usage will tell.
After all the SR was designed for higher HP/weights. Remember the original
Rebel design was for a 80 H.P. Rotax 912 and a gross of 1200 pounds. Now
that we have 150/180 hp and a gross of 1650, a "few" things need to be
beefed up from the original design!!

springProbably not enough history to know if this is a problem for the Super
Rebel. Anybody think a similar mod should be done for an SR?
