Hi all,
Just curious what the 'acceptable practice' was
regarding washers under bolt heads?
My 'Standard Aicraft Handbook' states you should
always use at least one, but no more than three,
washer(s) under a nut. It doesn't mention under the
bolt head? In some cases the manual for my SR doesn't
state the use of washers. Wondered what the accepted
practice was?

Use of washers

Use of washers
I think as long as you keep the unthreaded shank of the bolt in the hole
so no shear occurs on the threaded part you can do what you like.
Occasionally you have an arrangement where the bolt must be turned to
tighten it instead of the nut and then you should indeed have a washer
under the head. I sometimes use a longer bolt than MAM specifies to make
sure I have at least one washer under the nut. I check all bolt lengths
rather than rely on the manual. Since normal washers are 1/16" thick
they seem to be saying that if you need 3 of them, take out two and use
a 1/8" shorter bolt. It looks better. It took me awhile though to notice
that there are thin AN washers (-L) also commonly available that are
only 1/32" thick. Very convenient to have some of those around.
