Rebel fuselage tips for IT'S TOO QUIET

Post by klehman » Fri Feb 17, 2012 9:17 pm

Ok here's a comment for anyone building a standard Rebel fuselage. If
you add the floatfix mod to the fuselage before mounting the wings you
may wish to mark the hole in the fuselage root rib for the flap torque
tube first. The hole will likely influence the shape of the gusset and
the rivet locations on the forward side of the rear wing spar attachment
bracket.

Another one for anyone using the 1998 manual and installing a double
ST-31 channel to hold the fuselage torque tube hangar. This is behind
and above the pilots head. The manual has you install a 4" long doubler
over the cutout in the square bulkhead along the roof just inboard of
the rear wing spar attachment on the left side of the fuselage. (Ref.
fig. 12.8.8) You may wish to extend that doubler outboard and downward
so that one or both of the angle brackets on the aft end of the ST-31
can sit on top of that doubler. Otherwise the bracket sits half on and
half off the doubler which is not acceptable. In fact I would delay
making the doubler until you install the torque tube hangar so you can
see how things fit together. The manual would have you put the outboard
two rivets in the doubler very close to where you will later want to put
the rivets that will hold the brackets that attach the ST-31.

This is not a problem if you only install one piece of ST-31 as per the
old manual. There has been discussion here about the need to have
something a little beefier there though and the 1998 manual seems to
agree because it uses two pieces of ST-31. Wayne has talked about
repairing the original one piece of 0.020 ST-31 with 0.032 (ST-28?) to
support the hangar which would also avoid the problem as then the
bracket will only be on the outboard side of the one piece of ST-28.

cheers
Ken
