Hi Wayne and Ian,
You're correct, I'm sure, that every plane has its particular installation
for a given engine. However, the 912 and 912S are identical engines on the
outside. The differences are internal. If you have a 912 installed on your
plane now, it's as easy as unbolting one and putting on the other.
I realize Ian is starting from scratch and has to invent his own install kit,
or follow MAM's which I figure, after listening to Ian, is not very
inclusive. I wish I could be more helpful to you Ian, with your installation,
but I don't think my Kitfox experience would be of much use to you.
Be careful where you rout those carburetor vents (from the factory location)
that leak all over your exhaust if your carburetor's flood. And they do flood
from the shaking this engine produces because of its light weight and high
compression. Low mass props like the Warp Drive do nothing to dampen this
shaking that you will notice mostly on start up and shut down. These vents
are very atmospheric sensitive and routing them outside the cowling will
create a lower pressure in the carburetor bowl and could cause you problems,
like a dead engine. Not fun, trust me, I learned the hard way. Don't even
stick the vents in a larger tube and rout this larger tube out the cowling.
It doesn't work!
There is a new service bulletin last month on checking for cracks in the
carburetor boots. You should safety wire your carburetor boots to the engine
as well. Or better yet, tap and screw some tabs and attach two more springs
to each carburetor. Skystar has a kit with instructions for this procedure.
They would probably sell it to you if you asked them.
There is a "mandatory" service bulletin on the rocker spring retainers (they
can break and get ingested) that game out early this year. Check the Rotax
web site to see if your engine is effected. Most are. If your engine is new
you must do this service before your first run up.
All that said... I do love this engine and I'm sure you will too. Just keep
those carburetors synchronized and she'll purr like a kitten.
One more thing, Rotax now recommends Motor cycle oil with gear additives. No
more Mobil One. Use something like Castrol GT. or Honda Gold. Rotax has a
special service bulletin on these oils and there recommendations for use
based on your climate. You can access it on their Web sight, I'm sure.
