aileron alignment

Post by Rick DeCiero » Fri Feb 17, 2012 9:17 pm

Hello,
Does anyone have some suggestions for aligning the ailerons to the
neutral position? It appears as thought the trailing edge of the
ailerons in neutral is about 1" above the bottom plane of the wing. (I
also scaled the dimensions in FIGURE 63A in the control installation
section and came up with .965".) In other words, if you hold a straight
edge on the bottom of the wing, the centerline of the ail trailing edge
will be 1" higher than the top of the straight edge. When the ail is set
in this "neutral" position it does not match the fuseelage roof line.
The ail trailing edge is about 1" higher than the corresponding position
of the fuselage roof line. I think this is where the aileron will want
to fly at when in neutral. I believe this because the flat portion of
the ail which is towards the front of the ail will want to be pushed
into the slipstream (even with the wing bottom) and the upper position
will fall where ever it is pushed to from below. This will result in a
misalignment of the ail fairing box when the box is attached to the
fuselage because the box follows the roof line.
I am trying to set up the ailerons now and would appreciate any
input.

I also would like to thank our Canadian neighbors for sheltering our
citizens and bringing in aircraft during the horrible attack on humanity
on Sept 11. I extend my thanks to all others around the world that have
supported the United States during this crisis and hope and pray for
your continued support in the future.

Thank you,
Rick DeCiero

Rick.

A simple and exact way is to install the Hoerner tips
as I have outlined in my directions. Then simply
align the ailerons to the tips. This method was
tested by Curt Martin on 97MR and there were no other
adjustments.

Dave,
Thanks for tip(s) (pun intended). I'll line them up that way. The garage is
getting real tight with both wings on. I'll only be able to get 1 wing tip on
and will use measurements from that to get opposite side done.
Others who do not have your tips may be interested in my original question
regarding set up of ailerons to the neutral position. It will probably be next
week that I can get to this. I will try to post what I find out.

Hey Dave
I gather you had a run in with the doctors. Sounds like you are feeling
better.
best wishes
Ken

ps- does your answer below mean that you have printed up directions for
installing the tips? If so, are there any hints over and above what
Murphy says? Given a choice I'd definately prefer to install them before
mounting the wings.

Ken,

I was just reinforcing my directions that I send with
the tips. I believe I gave you a set? If I did not,
note me back with your address, or better yet, I will
copy them to an e-mail and send them to you.
FYI, as my tips are made to fit the wing vs, you the
builder rebuild them to fit like MAM tips are, they
are a 3 step process, slide them on as necessary,
level them (place a 4' level on top, make sure you
have same gap between top of wing and bottom of level)
and screw them in place.
Note me back if you need the complete directions.

BTW, I do feel a lot better, surgery went well and
I'll be 100% in a couple of weeks. Thanks for asking.
