Extended fuel

We are building Elite serial 611E with extended tanks and I have questioned
whether it is really worth it. The tanks are a little more complicated to
build, you are "storing" more fuel with the tanks full (as they should be),
and full fuel eats into your payload. On the other hand, you can fly to to
that back country strip with no fuel service and back, you can have long
range with ample reserve, and the plane is probably more saleable withlong
range fuel. If you are a mogas burner you will minimize 100LL purchases.
This is really a tossup as far as I see it based on how you will use the
airplane. With floats and the implied backwoods use I would add the extra
capacity. As a final note, there is no such thing as too much ProSeal
unless it is on your hands and clothes.

We are using an O-360 with a Powerflow exhaust as a great deal of our
useage will be high density altitude. If you can stand the cost the
Powerflow has added 23 HP to an O-320 and decreased fuel burn by a gallon +
per hour according to their dyno runs. This is the cheapest HP I know of
with no drawbacks. We have eyeballed the speed cowling and the Powerflow
on an O-360 in an RV-6 and it may clear with no cowling interference. Too
soon to tell now but if not a little glass mat and resin will do the trick.
I will report later if the Powerflow will or will not clear the speed cowl
and what was required.

Thanks, Ralph, for your thoughts on the extended
fuel, and also for the neat way to make an O-320
into an O-360! I will be very interested to hear
how your installation progresses.
