Floats for the Super Rebel

Post by Mike Kimball » Fri Feb 17, 2012 9:16 pm

Anyone know what's going on with the development of floats for the Super
Rebel? Also, does anyone know what the little tangs are made out of that
are used to attach the floats at the main landing gear attach points? On
the demonstrator they just looked like little triangular pieces of aluminum.
Probably just regular 6061 with T6 heat treatment and hardening.

Floats for the Super Rebel

Post by Bob Patterson » Fri Feb 17, 2012 9:16 pm

Hi Mike !

Mr. Murphy said several times at Oshkosh that he plans to have
the SR "on amphibs at Sun 'n Fun next spring" - and work is progressing
well. The plan is to build and test straight floats first, then build
the amphibs. They will only be offered as completely factory-built,
as this would likely be too big a job for most kit builders - this
is a BIG float (3600 lb. floatation) !!

The attach fittings are a high-load fitting, so would likely
be 2024 aluminum ..... (just guessing .....) In any case, I would
expect that they would be part of the float package, if not an aircraft
kit option, so there's no need to worry about making your own.

Hi Mike,
I'm not sure of the thickness of the tangs, but they are made from stainless. If I remember correctly they might be about 60thou. Curt N97MR

The tangs are a machined part, I think someone said 2024T3. MAM has them
available part number FL400, you need two on each side I picked up a set
last week. Have not heard the status of Murphy's floats but Montana Float
has their prototype 3500 anphibs out, and are taking orders.
