I am building the Super Rebel and I have been offered a O-540 engine
for $10,000CAD/$6800US. It's from an Aztec that has been sitting for
some time. He is selling it at "Core price", and it comes with all
accesories.

Is this a good price for what I will be getting? How much more would I
be looking at for an overhaul or rebuild?

Dave it sounds like a deal to me. I bought a IO470 Cont and will have
about
19000 after overhaul.

Hi Dave;

I am a total bone head when it comes to engine prices, perhaps some of the
other SR builders can help. One thing I know for sure is that you can really
get burnt buying an engine this way.

Dave:

Beware.

From the way you framed your question it looks like you may have not been
bitten by bad engine experiences before. The first things that spring to
mind are:

How long has it been sitting? Are there maintenance logs? How much total
time is on the engine? What is the current time to TBO now? What
accessories are included?

Basically, for an engine core to be good, it has to have a serviceable
crank, cam, rods and case. I will also help very much if the cylinder heads
are not cracked in the area of the spark-plug main boss, and if all the
cooling fins are intact other than that, cylinders can usually be overhauled
pretty well.

Anyway, I just realized in typing this that there is about a whole book's
worth of info on what might be involved in getting an engine such as this
back in the air. It is called:

The Major Overhaul
by Thomas

"Thomas. Subtitled: A Pilot's Guide. A book that demystifies the major
overhaul process. Find out exactly what constitutes a "new limits" major -
and how to save BIG money when the clock strikes TBO. An up-to-date,
technically accurate, unbiased introduction to the basics of the overhaul
process by one of the country's foremost authorities in engine matters.
Sftbd., 7"x 9 1/4", 312 pgs., 150 b&w ill."

121615.......$39.95

Available from Zenith Books: http://www.motorbooks.com/zenith.htm

If you are thinking that you can get this core and then build it up to suit
you, that is probably a good thought, although you'll need a good engine guy
to help you. I can suggest one that I use down here in California. He's
done two engines for me and frankly knows more than I ever will about this
process. (one is an O-320 for my Rebel)

To answer your real question, I don't see the price you quoted for the core
being that much of a bargain. You can check with Wentworth Aviation to
compare.

E-mail me directly at tlcarter@msn.com if you want to get in touch with a
good engine guy.

Be careful....it could be easy to spend more on a bargain than it is to buy
a complete overhaul and pay the core charge.

Go into this engine process informed as possible.

Hi David,

My suggestion would be to give Bart a call at Progressive Air. It is rare
that we install a factory new engine in any of our demonstrators. All of our
engines over the past few years have either come from them or been
overhauled by them.

They are located in Kamloops, it might be worth your while to see if you can
take the engine to them to look over BEFORE making a commitment. Bart would
then be able to give you a better idea as to the overhaul costs as well.
