I'm hoping someone can help me with actual build times for a Rebel kit. I
know it depends on numerous factors, and it's like asking the length of a
piece of string, but general indications would be very helpful.

Hello Stephen,

The Rebel does not take an extremely long time to complete in comparison to
some
designs on the market. The time you spend, however, will be highly
dependant on
the time you have to dedicate to building, the amount of help you have and
how
you intend to deal with a power plant.

1. Time! I have found while constructing my Rebel that devoting long
periods of
time to construction results in very fast progress. When you start putting
in
an hour here and there you will find the construction process really drags
on.
A practical guide that seems to get bantered around is approximately 1000
hours
of construction time to complete a Rebel. I think this is realistic, if you
intend to put in long periods of construction time and stay away from doing
your
own engine (David James R228, can elaborate on how much time is required
when
you tackle tasks of this nature).

2. Help! You will be amazed at how much faster construction progresses when
you
have an extra pair of helpful hands.

3. Engine and Instrumentation. As mentioned, experimenting with engine
configurations will dramatically increase your construction time. There
isn't
an easy way to determine how long you will have something that looks like an
aeroplane but doesn't fly because you are rebuilding an engine, creating a
reduction drive or welding your engine mount. This shouldn't really be of
consideration as any aircraft plans or kit built will result in the same
questions regarding the power plant, reduction drive, fuel (automotive vs
aviation), engine cooling system.... I think it is safe to say that lots of
builders change their minds on what they intend to do for an engine between
ordering their Rebel and flying it.

As you have mentioned, build times are going to be extremely variable but I
have
heard of builders taking as little as six months to complete their Rebels
and
some take years (like myself, I am still not finished).

Hi Stephen;
Like you say,"build time is a tricky question". From our experience it can

range from 800-1200 hours,the airframe itself goes together quickly. The
time consuming part is usually engine installation & plumbing, instruments &
wiring etc.

Many thanks to you all for some very informative posts on this subject (both
here and via e-mail). It's times like this I feel quite awed by how the
Internet can make so many things easier.

This will upset Greg, the Aus distributor, but the bad news is that it has
made me question if the Rebel (much as I like it) would be ideal for a
first-timer. I'm not worried about the technical aspects, but I've been
hankering after my own plane for years, and I think I know myself well
enough to realize that when I'd just rather be flying, the delays caused by
a project extending to 1,000 or 1,500 hours would drive me insane.

So, I may end up in the RANS Coyote crowd, but not for long. Then, with
something to scratch the flying itch a little more effectively than the old
Piper Warrior I hire at the local airport, I'll sit down and start building
the best darned Rebel any of you have ever seen. Besides your own, that is.

I am a first time builder and it took me about 1200 hours to build from
the firewall back. As mentioned by Philip Craig I did my own auto
engine conversion ( a BMW K100 motorcycle engine of approx. 100 hp). It
added a year or more, (I stopped counting hours) but I only have about
$5,000 Can firewall forward.
The option is cough up big time for a Lycosauris or 912 then call
Murphy and order the cowling, motor mount etc. Installation then
becomes no more difficult or time consuming than the rest of the kit.
Your wallet is however considerably lighter than after option 1.
As a comparison Wayne O'Shea , also a first time builder (albeit a very
talented one), built his Rebel in just less than 500 hours not including
paint and did an excellent job. His second one is essentially complete
firewall back in about 150 hours. If he wasn't so generous with helpful
tips I would be bitterly jealous.
